Loyola College's academic board expelled basketball standout Jason Rowe yesterday, ending the college career for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's Preseason Player of the Year. A senior guard who averaged 17.9 points, 5.2 assists and 3.0 steals for the Greyhounds this season, Rowe was suspended from Loyola two weeks ago after his grade-point average fell below school standards during the fall semester, according to sources close to the situation. Before the beginning of each semester, the academic board meets to discuss the status of students whose performance falls below the school's standards.

Senior guard Nathan Smith returned from a one-game layoff to score a season-high 28 points and lift American University to its first win, 72-65 over Loyola, last night at Bender Arena in Washington.Smith, AU's leading scorer whose 86-game playing streak ended with the Eagles' 16-point loss to Texas on Dec. 3, hit five of 12 three-pointers. His scoring total was two points short of his career high.American (1-5), playing without two starters, led nearly the entire game, but Loyola (1-6) forced the Eagles to hang on down the stretch to bring first-year coach Art Perry, a former Maryland assistant, his initial win.Matt Brown's basket gave AU a 60-51 lead with 3: 03 left, but Loyola followed with a 7-0 run and had a chance to tie before Jason Rowe missed a three-pointer with about 1: 30 left.

Loyola hit 65 percent of its shots in the first half, Jason Rowe nearly logged a triple double, and Brian Carroll foiled an old nemesis during a 101-90 win over Canisius last night at Reitz Arena. It was the first time the Greyhounds had topped 100 points since a 103-102 loss at Siena on Feb. 15, 1998, an outing vaguely memorable to Rowe. Rowe, who finished with 25 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds, said he couldn't remember the score of the Siena game. "Whatever it was, it was a long time ago. I can't tell you the last time we had 100 in this building, so it was a good feeling."

Their idyll of summer pickup games abruptly interrupted, those on the Loyola men's basketball team recently forsook the charms of a warm day to run drills at Reitz Arena under the tutelage of coach Dino Gaudio.Tomorrow, the Greyhounds are headed to France to play four games against club teams over an eight-day period. So players ran their drills with aplomb, smiling more often than not.Even a chronic ankle sprain couldn't douse the spirits of the team's star player, Jason Rowe, who sat out practice and instead operated the scoreboard in his temporary role of de facto team manager.

Loyola coach Dino Gaudio walked into the locker room at halftime last night, screamed at his players for 15 seconds and suddenly disappeared."It was really kind of scary," sophomore point guard Jason Rowe said. "That is the quickest he's ever yelled at us at halftime and then he walked right out the door. He was more or less trying to get us going."Gaudio got results in a big way as Loyola came out and probably played its best half of the season to rout Marist, 80-61, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Reitz Arena.
