The idea of incarcerating someone who has not been charged with a crime is generally repugnant to the American conscience. The idea of sending people who have not committed a crime to jail in order to get information out of them is even more so. And perhaps that is what is so disturbing about a judge's order Thursday sentencing two newspaper reporters to 18 months in federal prison for refusing to disclose the source for their stories about athletes' drug...

SEATTLE -- Barry Bonds was a bit of a bust, but Arizona Diamondbacks star Luis Gonzalez stepped up to win last night's All-Star Home Run Derby at raucous Safeco Field. Gonzalez, who has been Bonds' understudy in this year's heady National League home run chase, hit six homers in the final round to win the popular pre-All-Star exhibition. He defeated Chicago Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa, who played a similar supporting role during Mark McGwire's record season in 1998. Bonds advanced to the second round of the three-round event, but dropped out in a head-to-head competition with the man who is closing in on him in the regular-season homer rankings.

Not so perfect Toronto Blue Jays left-hander Gustavo Chacin retired the first nine batters he faced before Jay Payton, making his first start for the Orioles, lined a single to center field. The Orioles weren't finished, though. Melvin Mora walked and Nick Markakis followed with a two-run triple, the ball hitting the top of the fence in center field. Markakis scored on a single by Miguel Tejada, and the Orioles led 3-1. Clutch again Tejada entered the weekend 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

A recap of the Orioles' 7-5 victory over the Royals last night: GOT HIM The Orioles and starter Radhames Liz fell behind 1-0 three batters into the game, and it took only one big swing. Alex Gordon hit his 11th home run, and it traveled 425 feet over the flag court in right field. Gordon became the fourth player this season to put a ball onto Eutaw Street and the third opposing player, joining Jason Giambi (twice) and Lance Berkman. Nick Markakis is the only Orioles representative. Forty-five homers have landed on Eutaw since the ballpark opened in 1992.

Members of the Oakland Athletics use the term "youth movement" to characterize the club's recent roster moves. That doesn't necessarily translate into a concession, however, especially in the era of the wild card. The Athletics, with last night's 7-2 victory, have won eight of 10 to draw within 2 1/2 games of Texas in the AL wild-card race."Realistically, I think we have as good a chance as anybody," said Oakland catcher Terry Steinbach. "I like where our momentum is, coming off a successful [7-4]

This latest entanglement for Miguel Tejada doesn't teach us anything new about baseball and performance-enhancing drugs. All it does is reinforce what we already knew, and the events of the past few days tell us that a lot of people needed reinforcing, or else they stay deluded about how bad this is. What Tejada's federal court appearance today - for allegedly lying to congressional investigators about his knowledge of teammates' use of performance-enhancing drugs...
