NEARLY PERFECT Only Nick Markakis' fourth-inning single to left field prevented Mariners veteran left-hander Jarrod Washburn from throwing a perfect game. Washburn retired the first 11 Orioles and the final 16 in the first one-hit shutout of his lengthy career. It was also the first one-hitter thrown by a Mariner in the 10-year history of Safeco Field. OUTDONE Orioles rookie Brad Bergesen didn't pitch poorly in suffering his first loss since May 19, but he did make two costly mistakes, allowing a solo homer to Russell Branyan in the first and a two-run double to Chris Woodward in the sixth.

It's a different team in Detroit this season, one that is paced by pitching and not a slugging offense. The Tigers have the second-lowest ERA in the American League, thanks to strong starting pitching. Edwin Jackson and Justin Verlander rank in the top 10 in the AL in ERA, and so does the club's newest addition, Jarrod Washburn. He'll be making his Tigers debut Tuesday against the Orioles. The Tigers, who have allowed the fewest runs in the AL, have not scored as much as their solid lineup would suggest.

Seattle took two of three from the Texas Rangers at Safeco Field to start the season. Its lone loss came when All-Star closer J.J. Putz, who converted his first 29 save opportunities last season, allowed a two-run, go-ahead home run to Josh Hamilton in the ninth inning Tuesday. The next day Putz was put on the disabled list with a rib injury. Tomorrow's starter, Batista, earned the save Wednesday. In the Texas series, Seattle starters -Bedard, Hernandez and Carlos Silva - allowed two earned runs in 19 innings.
