Charles W. St. Clair Sr., an accountant who launched a second career as a Jarrettsville Christmas tree farmer, died May 31 of pneumonia at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air. He was 88. Born on a Jarrettsville dairy farm, in the early 19th-century house he would restore and move back to in 1977, Mr. St. Clair was a direct descendant of Luther Jarrett, founder of Jarrettsville. He grew up on the farm but had a career in business before he started moonlighting in the early 1960s as a Christmas tree grower as a way to put his children through college.

A Jarrettsville teenager was killed after the car in which she was riding collided with a truck Monday afternoon. Ashley Nicole Stewart, 18, was in the front passenger seat of a 2005 Chevy Cobalt driven by Mark P. Buchanan, a 19-year-old also from Jarrettsville. Investigators from the Harford County sheriff's office believe the Cobalt was traveling south on Grier Nursery Road near Miller Road when it crossed the center lane and struck a 2001 Chevy truck traveling north and driven by Jorge Velazquez, 32, of Forest Hill.

As a subscriber to The Baltimore Sun for fifty years or more, I just want to comment on the improvement to the newspaper lately. My husband and I had just about given up on The Sun and started a subscription to the Washington Post (we did not cancel our Sun subscription). In the past few months, the change has been noticeable. For a while, the paper came with two very thin sections. The feature sections have grown and there is more to read daily and on weekends. The news still isn't what it used to be and we still get the Post since it does provide more national news, but kudos to your new editor.

A duffel bag containing a skull and what are believed to be three human bones was found in a Jarrettsville chicken coop yesterday, according to the Harford County Sheriff's Office. The bones, found in the 1400 block of Rock Ridge Road, are to be taken to the medical examiner's office today, said Sgt. Dave Betz, Harford County Sheriff's Office spokesman. One of the bones contained markings of what appeared to be a stamp or writing, Betz said. Investigators are trying to determine whether the bones were used in an educational setting or whether a crime is involved.

Jarrettsville bank beginnings go way back On Feb. 22, 1870, the Jarrettsville Building Association met to offer at an auction its first loan of $400. The association was organized in 1869 to promote financial stability after the Civil War. The early directors sought to encourage home ownership and increase saving. The association constructed its own building in 1952 and later changed its name to Jarrettsville Federal Savings and Loan Association. By invitation only, some 200 guests of Jarrettsville Furniture mingled yesterday in an Earl Grey-infused vapor of gentility and celebrity. They were there to meet Charles, the ninth Earl Spencer and the late Princess Diana's entrepreneurial younger brother, who has turned his aristocratic pedigree into a furniture brand, the Althorp Living History collection. Bill and Gail Kuester came from Hagerstown to get their new Althorp chest of drawers autographed by Spencer. It was a little more cumbersome than having a book or photograph signed, but the couple carried their burden with good humor.
