Jarrettsville bank beginnings go way back On Feb. 22, 1870, the Jarrettsville Building Association met to offer at an auction its first loan of $400. The association was organized in 1869 to promote financial stability after the Civil War. The early directors sought to encourage home ownership and increase saving. The association constructed its own building in 1952 and later changed its name to Jarrettsville Federal Savings and Loan Association. Also survived by eight granddaughters and four great-granddaughters. Services will be held Tuesday, October 14, at 11 A.M. at Jarrettsville United Methodist Church, Jarrettsville, MD. Interment in William Watters Cemetery. Friends may call at the family owned Kurtz Funeral Home P.A., Jarrettsville, Monday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 P.M. Wade Hawthorne Gowl, owner of a modular building company and a Jarrettsville horse farm, died Tuesday of complications of Alzheimer's disease at the Continuum Care nursing home in Sykesville. He was 86. The youngest of 13 children, Mr. Gowl was raised in South Baltimore and became a dental technician before founding the Atlantic Trailer Corp. in 1955. Though the Middle River firm went bankrupt in 1978, Mr. Gowl restarted it as Porta-Space Inc. in Shrewsbury, Pa. The companies produced trailers for schools needing temporary classroom, barracks used by troops in Saudi Arabia and modular units that could be stacked atop hospitals wanting to expand.

On November 15, 2004, MARTHA MARKLINE SPICE, devoted wife of Ralph Spice; loving mother of Ella Buraszeski, Dr. Loren Spice, Benjamin Spice, and Adam Spice; devoted sister of Patricia Amrein. A memorial service will be held at Kurtz Funeral Home, Jarrettsville, MD, on November 18, at 5 P.M. The family is welcoming friends and loved ones at 3869 Colwyn Drive, Jarrettsville, MD, following the service.

On March 11, 2004, K. FRANCES (nee Goodwin) of Jarrettsville, MD, formerly of Baltimore. Wife of the late C. Melvin Phoebus, mother of Donald M. Phoebus and grandmother of Charles R. Phoebus and Laura L. Riley. Services will be held Monday, March 15, at 10 A.M. from the family-owned Kurtz Funeral Home, P.A., 1114 Baldwin Mill Rd., Jarrettsville. Interment in Moreland Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Salem Lutheran Church, Jarrettsville.

Lynn Carol Cockerham, 44, a Jarrettsville resident, died Tuesday of complications of kidney disease at the University of Maryland Medical Center.Services for the Baltimore native were to be held at 1 p.m. today at New Life Church of God, 1249 North Bend Road, Jarrettsville.She is survived by two sons, William Marcus Cockerham of Jarrettsville and Wesley Michael Cockerham of Airville, Pa.; a brother, Stephen Wayne Cockerham of Upperco; two sisters, Linda Berkowitz of Mechanicsville, Pa., and Anne E. Berrell of Bel Air; and a granddaughter.
