A computer analyst for the Maryland Automobile Insurance Fund was killed yesterday when he lost control of his car while passing another vehicle on Dogwood Road in Woodlawn and crashed into a utility pole, Baltimore County police said.Officer Roy Jarrell said George William Archie, 49, of the 9700 block of Slalom Run Drive in Woodstock was driving a 1986 Porsche 911 west in the 7400 block of Dogwood Road about 4: 12 p.m. when his auto crossed the double-yellow line while passing another vehicle.

If Gov. Martin O'Malley wants to make some real money when his second term ends, he might want to apply for work at the University System of Maryland. The great majority of the 1,346 workers who match or beat the governor's $150,000 annual salary, including the 15 highest earners, work for the university system, according to a Baltimore Sun analysis of state employee salaries for 2010. Most of the exceptions are doctors with the state Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, a few judges and a scattering of others.

MIAMI, Fla. -- The one-story structure with its rooftop row of antennae and satellite dishes may not look that imposing, but don't be fooled by the new National Hurricane Center, probably the safest shelter in South Florida.Dedicated this week to coincide with yesterday's beginning of the 1995 Atlantic hurricane season, the $5 million structure contains 3,000 cubic yards of concrete, enough to build 1 mile of interstate highway.It was designed to withstand 130-mph winds and -- a government brochure says -- a direct hit by a "250-pound projectile at 60 mph."

ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA. -- A group of National Aquarium volunteers who donated six months of their time to help nurse a sick pygmy sperm whale back to health were preparing last night to wave their farewell.Near sunrise today, weather permitting, the volunteers and aquarium officials will free the young female whale, nicknamed "Inky," off the Florida coast -- their goal since the creature was found stranded and near death Thanksgiving Day on the New Jersey shore."It's hard to believe, after six months -- after tomorrow -- it's bye-bye," said Judy Gresser, 30, a between-jobs medical technician who flew here with Inky May 5, leaving behind her understanding husband, Towson physician Lee Gresser.

ANNAPOLIS -- The state Department of Education has notified 22 workers that their jobs will be terminated this summer, including nine people who produce instructional videos for classroom use.The terminations, announced to employees Friday, will take effect June 30 and are intended to help reduce costs in the fiscal 1992 budget, Larry N. Chamblin, a Department of Education spokesman, said yesterday.The 22 positions are in addition to the 78 vacant jobs being eliminated in the 1992 budget proposal, Mr. Chamblin said.

A girl in the care of a baby-sitter while her parents were away on vacation was killed yesterday in a traffic accident on a rain-slicked road north of White Marsh in Baltimore County, police said.Police declined to identify the victim last night, because her parents had not returned home.Sgt. Stephen Doarnberger, police spokesman, said the child, about 6 or 7 years old, was dead on arrival at Johns Hopkins Children's Center.Three other people were hurt in the 11 a.m. accident on Philadelphia Road at Allender Road.
