The first difference someone might notice in Lake Clifton's Paris Carter is the absence of the braids that had dangled from his head since his freshman year. The second is the increased size of the 6-foot-4, 200-pound senior's biceps. "I had to put in some hard work during the offseason," said Carter, who now sports a goatee and closely cropped hair. "As the biggest man on my team this year, I've have to play more under the boards." Carter flexed his muscles in last night's 60-50 victory over 16th-ranked Lansdowne (7-2)

Towson scoring hotshot Kyle Campbell and a bunch of Navy Midshipmen are the toast of the college lacrosse world this week after leading their teams to major upsets last weekend. Campbell became a legitimate big-game performer by scoring seven goals in a 19-14 victory over then ninth-ranked Loyola on Saturday. It was the culmination of a long and sometimes tortuous journey from Mount Hebron High to a starring role for the Tigers (5-2 and 11th-ranked) for Campbell. The sophomore attackman went from Mount Hebron to Loyola College to Howard Community College to Towson, where he has found a home.

A hush fell over Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium yesterday when Johns Hopkins found another way to make life miserable for the Navy lacrosse team. The sixth-ranked Blue Jays ran their mastery over the Midshipmen to 26 straight victories when senior midfielder A.J. Haugen made a quick move to the goal from the left side and sent a low, blistering, 11-yard shot into the net with just 47 seconds gone in overtime for a 7-6 win before a crowd of 5,462. It was the first overtime win in the run of 26 in a row for Hopkins, which has not lost to Navy in lacrosse since 1974, when the Midshipmen posted a 13-12 victory in Annapolis.

WASHINGTON -- Navy's path to the NCAA lacrosse tournament got a lot tougher yesterday. Faced with the tempting probability of winning an automatic berth by beating Georgetown at Kehoe Field, the Midshipmen were blitzed by a five-goal burst in the first four minutes and never quite recovered, dropping a 14-10 decision before 3,189 sun-splashed fans at Kehoe Field. Seventh-ranked Georgetown (7-1, 3-0) thus gained the inside track on the title in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference, whose champion qualifies for the Division I playoffs.

The regular season has nearly reached its midpoint, and Navy soon faces a chance to clinch a berth in the NCAA tournament. The Midshipmen, who should improve their record to 6-1 tonight against visiting Air Force, can win the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference title by beating No. 5 Georgetown on Saturday. A victory at Georgetown would leave Navy in the driver's seat in the ECAC. Even if they lost to Penn State on April 15 in their sixth and final conference game, the Midshipmen would wrap up their league schedule with one loss, and they would have the edge over the Hoyas in a head-to-head tiebreaker.

Art Lilly surveyed the ruins of his boat repair shop in Edgewater yesterday -- twisted metal, melted signs and the charred vessels of his customers in the wake of a weekend five-alarm blaze. Fire investigators are trying to pinpoint whether an exploding transformer, as described by a witness, was the cause of the fire that engulfed the shop of Lilly Sport Boats in flames Sunday afternoon. Lilly said 15 high-performance boats were destroyed or badly damaged, and his shop and storage facility were destroyed by the fire.

Navy coach Richie Meade hears from longtime alumni that goalkeeper Mickey Jarboe might be the best in academy history. Others foresee a first-team All-America slot for him.Yet rewind four years back to Calvert Hall, and the only spot reserved for Jarboe was on the sideline. As a perennial backup to classmate Strider Dickson, he started seven games in his three-year varsity career and even contemplated a position change. But in Annapolis, the only change involving Jarboe has been in the Navy record books.
