SAN JOSE STATE president Dr. Gail Fullerton is too easily impressed. She says her new athletic director, Dr. Tom Brennan, who has been at Loyola College since 1986, has an "impressive record in building Division I programs."Loyola's flagship sport historically is basketball, which is in shambles. The combined records of the men's and women's teams last year was 6-50. Brennan inherited strong lacrosse and soccer programs. One athletic department hireling at Evergreen says of Brennan's departure: "Loyola's gain is San Jose's loss."

There's always room for improvement -- even if you're Boys' Latin, the area's No. 1 boys lacrosse team.Faceoffs were one focus in yesterday's 12-6 Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference victory over No. 6 Calvert Hall (4-2, 2-2).Though the visiting Lakers (8-0, 3-0) won their last game easily over No. 9 Mount St. Joseph, they had struggled off the draw, losing 11 of 21 there. Calvert Hall, in a 10-3 win, had dominated that phase of the game, 15-2, against St. Joe."Coach [Bob Shriver]

The regular season has nearly reached its midpoint, and Navy soon faces a chance to clinch a berth in the NCAA tournament. The Midshipmen, who should improve their record to 6-1 tonight against visiting Air Force, can win the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference title by beating No. 5 Georgetown on Saturday. A victory at Georgetown would leave Navy in the driver's seat in the ECAC. Even if they lost to Penn State on April 15 in their sixth and final conference game, the Midshipmen would wrap up their league schedule with one loss, and they would have the edge over the Hoyas in a head-to-head tiebreaker.

WASHINGTON -- Navy's path to the NCAA lacrosse tournament got a lot tougher yesterday. Faced with the tempting probability of winning an automatic berth by beating Georgetown at Kehoe Field, the Midshipmen were blitzed by a five-goal burst in the first four minutes and never quite recovered, dropping a 14-10 decision before 3,189 sun-splashed fans at Kehoe Field. Seventh-ranked Georgetown (7-1, 3-0) thus gained the inside track on the title in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference, whose champion qualifies for the Division I playoffs.

It was one of those occasions when good fortune was much more productive than good planning.Adam Borcz happened to be in the right place to scoop up an errant pass yesterday and fire it past Georgetown goalie Brian Hole with four seconds left in the first overtime to lift the Naval Academy to a stirring 12-11 lacrosse victory before 2,637 sun-drenched fans at Dewey Field. The win over the seventh-ranked Hoyas was a vital one for the 10th-ranked Midshipmen, who were in danger of falling to .500 with four ranked teams remaining on their schedule, including Maryland and Johns Hopkins.

The first difference someone might notice in Lake Clifton's Paris Carter is the absence of the braids that had dangled from his head since his freshman year. The second is the increased size of the 6-foot-4, 200-pound senior's biceps. "I had to put in some hard work during the offseason," said Carter, who now sports a goatee and closely cropped hair. "As the biggest man on my team this year, I've have to play more under the boards." Carter flexed his muscles in last night's 60-50 victory over 16th-ranked Lansdowne (7-2)

Adam Borcz is a plebe, but the Anne Arundel County native has been following Navy lacrosse long enough to know about the intense rivalry between the Midshipmen and the University of Pennsylvania.Yesterday afternoon, Borcz was right in the middle of it. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound midfielder got four goals and an assist as Navy downed the Quakers, 12-11, before 739 at Rip Miller Field.Penn cut the lead to one with 1: 05 remaining, but Navy won the ensuing faceoff on a pushing penalty and was able to run out the clock.

Towson scoring hotshot Kyle Campbell and a bunch of Navy Midshipmen are the toast of the college lacrosse world this week after leading their teams to major upsets last weekend. Campbell became a legitimate big-game performer by scoring seven goals in a 19-14 victory over then ninth-ranked Loyola on Saturday. It was the culmination of a long and sometimes tortuous journey from Mount Hebron High to a starring role for the Tigers (5-2 and 11th-ranked) for Campbell. The sophomore attackman went from Mount Hebron to Loyola College to Howard Community College to Towson, where he has found a home.
