SAN FRANCISCO -- Payne Stewart hasn't turned the 98th U.S. Open at the Olympic Club into a two-flight event, as Tiger Woods did at last year's Masters and Nick Price did four years ago in the PGA Championship at Southern Hills. But a player known more for what he wears than what he wins did his best to show there is more to him than a fancy wardrobe. While many of those in contention coming into yesterday's third round faltered on the windy fairways and rock-hard greens, Stewart managed to hold his game together.

POTOMAC -- When Tom Kite tapped in a three-foot birdie putt on the par-3 ninth hole yesterday, just about everybody at Avenel figured that the $1.3 million Kemper Open was all but over and his comeback from a serious injury nearly complete.Kite was 11-under par, having played the front nine in 4-under par. He was four shots ahead of Grant Waite, the first- and second-round leader, and six ahead of anybody else. He was seemingly in control, conquering both the competition and the 7,005-yard course.

POTOMAC -- To paraphrase, some tournaments are born great -- the open championships of golf-loving countries, for instance -- while others have greatness thrust upon them: the Masters, the Ryder Cup competition and the Pebble Beach Pro-Am back in the days of Bing Crosby.Mostly, though, tourneys have to tough it out through some lean years, pray that sponsors and the crowds keep the faith and hope vagaries such as bad weather, an unappealing date on the tour schedule, player prejudices and course peccadillos aren't too much to overcome.

Far from perfect, No. 5 Cincinnati was good enough to stay unbeaten. Tony Pike threw two touchdown passes in a cameo appearance Friday night, and the host Bearcats overcame a self-destructive first half to beat West Virginia 24-21 for the best start in school history. Cincinnati (10-0, 6-0 Big East) struggled offensively because of uncharacteristic mistakes. Isaiah Pead ran for a career-high 175 yards, and sophomore Zach Collaros threw for 205 yards in his fourth start in place of Pike, who is recovering from an injury to his non-throwing arm. •Three Tennessee freshmen charged with attempted armed robbery will not play Saturday at Mississippi.

College football's winningest program just took another hit off the field. The University of Michigan released embarrassing details of an internal audit Monday that discovered Rich Rodriguez's team failed to file forms tracking how much time players spent on football during the 2008 season and the following offseason. The NCAA and the school are investigating the program about similar issues. Rodriguez has said he and his coaches know and follow NCAA rules. The Detroit Free Press, citing anonymous football players, reported in August that Michigan was exceeding NCAA limits regarding practices and workouts.
