CHICAGO -- They were all wearing black suits and grim expressions the night of June 22.As they walked into the home clubhouse at Camden Yards, Orioles general manager Roland Hemond, assistant GM Frank Robinson and player development director Syd Thrift could have been confused for pallbearers.Orioles starters Kevin Brown and Ben McDonald were placed on the disabled list that night, and wouldn't be back before the All-Star break. The club was in fourth place and nine games behind the first-place Boston Red Sox, and faced two weeks of games that could effectively end their season.

MILWAUKEE -- Somebody had to step up after Ben McDonald and Kevin Brown were injured last week. Somebody had to step forward in the rotation, pick up the slack, keep the Orioles close in the AL East race.Somebody has. Left-hander Jamie Moyer, part-time reliever, allowed the Milwaukee Brewers no hits for 5 2/3 innings last night, and combined with relievers Terry Clark and Doug Jones for a two-hit, 2-0 victory -- the first shutout of the year for the Orioles. This, the day after Arthur Rhodes dominated the Boston Red Sox. Somebody has stepped up. Times two."

* Last night's game was the last one under the lights for the Orioles until they meet the Rangers on Friday at The Ballpark in Arlington. In between, the Orioles play their next six games during the day. The Orioles are 1-0 during the daytime this year, while only 22-24 last year. The Orioles haven't had a winning record in day games since 1986 when they were 26-23.* The Orioles, who were 4-8 against the Rangers last year, lost their first season series against the Rangers since 1974.* The Rangers have the best record of any opponent at Camden Yards.
