On a day when the country was draped in black, a little girl wore pink. She looked as pretty as a picture - and became one: The next morning her photo would appear on the front page of more than 45 U.S. newspapers, plus others as far away as Scotland, Brazil and Australia. "It has a kind of painterly quality to it," says Joe Urschel, executive director of the Newseum in Washington. "For a photographer to get that in an unstaged moment is next to impossible." The shot was taken by Spencer Platt, who works for Getty Images and was at Ground Zero in New York City this past Tuesday covering the fifth anniversary of September 11. President Bush was there.

On August 8, 2005, JOSEPH M. PAOLINO, survived by his wife Jennie M. Paolino; three daughters, Regina Powell, Linda Smith and Sandra Morgan; eight grandchildren, David Huber, Joshua Duckworth, Todd Smith, Tara Smith, Tatum Smith, James Smith, Danielle Eckelt and Dustin Eckelt and also survived by eight great-grandchildren. Suddenly, on June 27, 2005, NALEI ANN SAKOWSKI-SMITH, beloved daughter of Virginia and Gus Smith, dear sister of Haven Smith, loving grand-daughter of Frances and Stanley Sakowski, and Mary and James Smith, and great granddaughter of Geraldine Himmel and Stanley Sakowski. She is also survived by many loving family and friends. Memorial Service at Patapsco Methodist Church on Saturday at 11 A.M. Interment private. THERE APPEARED to be a sudden thaw last week in the frosty relationship between Republican Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. and Baltimore County Executive James T. Smith Jr., who have found themselves embroiled in a series of spats over the past two years. Ehrlich - who once tried to persuade a Democratic county councilman to switch parties and oppose Smith in 2006 - invited the county executive to Annapolis for the release of his capital budget and as a guest at the State of the State speech.

Edna V. Cormack, a former secretary and homemaker, died of cancer Thursday at Ma Maison, a Perry Hall assisted-living facility. She was 86. Born Edna Virginia Smith in Glen Arm, she was raised in Parkville. She was a 1934 graduate of Towson High School, and also graduated from Strayer Business College in Baltimore. During the 1930s and 1940s, she worked as a secretary at Baltimore Sales Book Co., and later for George Hess, president of Hess Shoes, until her marriage to J. Vernon Cormack in 1946.

On January 22, 2004, MARY LOUISE (BURNETT) SMITH, age 88, passed away quietly at the Charlestown Retirement Community, Catonsville, MD, where she had resided since 1987. She was the beloved wife of the late Howard Jay Smith; beloved mother of two sons, H. Lee Smith and his wife Joyce, of Flemington, NJ, James Smith and his wife Ann, of Jacksonville, FL, and a daughter, Mary Ellen Parks and her husband Joshua, of Bluffton, SC. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Hollie Einolf, Melinda Granlund, Craig Rice, Matthew Smith, and Donald Rice; and one great grandson, Zachary Einolf.
