We all know the Ravens have struggled to draft and develop wide receivers in their 15-year history. But as my Baltimore Sun colleague Jamison Hensley pointed out this weekend in an article on the subject, it’s not for a lack of trying. The Ravens have drafted 16 wide receivers over the years, from Jermaine Lewis in 1996 to David Reed last year. Here’s a link to Hensley’s story , which is a good read. General manager Ozzie Newsome said at least week’s draft luncheon that the Ravens will take a wide receiver with one of their nine picks, and with T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Donte’ Stallworth set to become free agents, that probably isn’t a smokescreen.

Green Bay place-kicker Richie Cunningham kicked a 42-yard field goal with three seconds remaining as the Green Bay Packers defeated the Ravens, 17-15, last night at Memorial Stadium. It was the Ravens (2-1) first loss of the preseason and it came against a team many favor to win the 1997 Super Bowl.Cunningham's kicked ended an eight-play drive that started at the Green Bay 31 with 1: 02 left in the game. The big play in the drive was a 35-yard pass from quarterback Doug Pederson to receiver Desmond Howard that put the ball on the Ravens' 30.The Ravens had taken a 15-14 lead with 1: 06 remaining when quarterback Eric Zeier threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Ray )

The Ravens' Ray Ethridge got the word just minutes before kickoff last night at Memorial Stadium.Part of the news was expected. Wide receiver Michael Jackson, who had sat out practice for most of the week with a slight knee sprain, would not start against the Green Bay Packers. The other news came as a bit of a surprise.Ethridge would be the starter in Jackson's place. Then, Ethridge went out and played like a starter. He caught five passes for 68 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown from backup quarterback Eric Zeier with 1: 06 left that gave the Ravens a 15-14 lead they failed to hold.

The Ravens practiced yesterday at Western Maryland College after enjoying their first night off since training camp began 13 days ago. Players spent their first night without a curfew, and were not required to report to camp until lunchtime.Among the dropped passes, missed blocks and general lack of hustle, the workout was a bit uninspired."They practiced sort of like you'd expect them to after a night off," coach Ted Marchibroda said. "You hope the practice level doesn't fall off, but it did. Nothing to be concerned about.

Ravens wide receiver James Roe seems to be enjoying a lot of attention this week. With Michael Jackson (ruptured biceps) doubtful for Sunday's game and slot receiver Jermaine Lewis (ankle sprain) questionable, Roe has been getting in a lot of practice time.Roe, a sixth-round pick in 1996, has spent most of his playing time on special teams this year. But the former Norfolk State product has some of the best hands on the team and has run with the first and second teams this week along with Ryan Yarborough.
