Speaking at an emotional hearing on federal gun control proposals, Baltimore County Police Chief James W. Johnson urged lawmakers Wednesday to close loopholes and ban assault weapon sales or risk more tragedies like the recent elementary school shooting in Connecticut. Johnson, wearing his uniform, spent nearly four hours offering law enforcement's case for tighter gun laws, confronting a well-known witness - National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre - and noting the proliferation of guns sometimes makes police work "creepy.

On October 28, 2006, due to her battle wth cancer, DEBORAH ANNE HOFFMAN, of Hampden; beloved daughter of James Johnson and the late Gloria Bowman; loving mother of Michelle and Marianne Zakrjewski. Also survived by two beautiful grandsons, one brother and sister and many close friends and family. We are very sadden by our loss but she is at rest now, though her memory will live on through others.

Baltimore County Police Chief James W. Johnson was among law enforcement officials from around the country who met with Vice President Joe Biden at the White House Thursday to discuss ways to curb gun violence. President Barack Obama this week announced plans to make gun control a top priority during his second term, following the Connecticut school shooting last week. The incident left 28 dead, including 20 children and the gunman. "The President is absolutely committed to keeping his promise that we will act, and we will act in a way that is designed -- even if, as he says, we can only save one life, we have to take action," Biden said at the meeting.

An Aberdeen man has been charged with two counts of attempted murder after allegedly attacking two brothers, one of whom tried to save the other from being beaten.Craigg "Chicken" Wallace, 23, of the 1300 block of Philadelphia Blvd., also has been charged with two counts of carrying a deadly weapon with intent to injure in the July 20 attack.Two other men are wanted on charges in the alleged attack, but have not been served arrest warrants, according to District Court records.Mr. Wallace, who is being held on $50,000 bond at the county detention center, is scheduled for trial in Harford District Court Aug. 14. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Ejner James Johnson, who was chief of staff for Gov. Harry R. Hughes and former head of the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration, died of Parkinson's disease Tuesday at Baltimore Washington Medical Center. He was 74. As Mr. Hughes' chief of staff, he played a pivotal role in helping the governor restore confidence in the state's savings and loans during a crisis in the mid-1980s that threatened to cause the collapse of the state's thrifts. He also is credited with making the Motor Vehicle Administration more accessible by opening branch offices around the state.
