James Hall lived to rappel, or move down cliffs by means of a double rope.As a member of the National Guard, the Severna Park resident had mastered the treacherous rock-climbing technique and even demonstrated it around the United States and in Canada and England.Mr. Hall was in the middle of a rappelling demonstration Saturday for a group of Boy Scout Explorers when he fell to his death from a cliff in Ellicott City."Being in the Guard was the focus of his life, and his big interest was rappelling -- doing exactly what he was doing" when he died, said his father, George Hall of Bowie.

James Hall Bready, an Evening Sun editorial writer for more than three decades and originator of the "Books and Authors" column that was published in The Baltimore Sun for nearly 50 years, died Saturday of renal failure at Gilchrist Hospice Care in Towson. The Homeland resident was 92. Mr. Bready, whose parents were staff members of the old Philadelphia Ledger, was born in Philadelphia and raised in South Jersey. He was a graduate of Woodbury High School and Moorestown Friends School, both in New Jersey.

FRANCES ELIZABETH HALL, 87, was born October 24, 1918 to Benjamin and Virginia (Kearn) Blake in Baltimore, Maryland. She passed away in Glen Valley Care Center on April 25, 2006. She married Kenneth James Hall and they had 3 children Kenneth Hall Jr. and Arlene (Hall) Berry and an infant daughter, Nancy who preceded her in death. Frances moved to the area to be near her family in 1977. She loved doing crafts, especially making gumdrop trees at Christmas. She volunteered in her granddaughter's first grade class.

John Carmel Hall Sr., 82, worked at News AmericanJohn Carmel Hall Sr., a retired News American makeup editor, died of pneumonia Monday at Carroll County General Hospital in Westminster. He was 82 and had been a resident of Copper Ridge Nursing Home in Sykesville since 1995.A Mass of Christian burial was offered Thursday.The former resident of Waverly and Northwood began his newspaper career in 1932 as a copy boy and retired in 1984 as a sports makeup editor.For many years, he was a member of St. Bernard Roman Catholic Church on Gorsuch Ave., where he was a Eucharistic minister and lector.

Dr. Arthur T. Hall Sr., a retired surgeon, died Thursday after undergoing surgery at Atlantic General Hospital in Salisbury. The Ocean City resident was 81 and had previously resided in Ten Hills. A general surgeon, he served his internship at St. Agnes Hospital and later practiced there and at Bon Secours. For many years, he saw patients at the Professional Arts Building in Catonsville. In 1958, he was appointed medical director of the Westinghouse Space and Defense Center in Linthicum, a position he held until he retired in 1983.

Devoted son of the late James Joseph Hall and Catherine Margaret Hohmes Hall, loving brother of Kevin Hall and his wife Loretta and Maryann Salyards and her husband Kenneth. Also survived by several nieces and nephews Lauren, Jason and Mark Salyards and Gina, Grant and Jennifer Banks. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Stephen Catholic Church, Bradshaw, MD on Wednesday, June 4, 2003 at 10 A.M. Interment will be in Bel Air Memorial Gardens, Bel Air, MD. Friends may call at the family owned McComas Funeral Home, P.A., Abingdon, MD on Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 P.M. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to A.M.C.
