In a rare victory for preservationists, an Ellicott City estate that once belonged to one of Howard County's oldest families will forever remain a green and tree-lined glimpse of times past instead of becoming the site of a large 21st-century development. The owner of Keewaydin, a 10.2-acre homestead a mile from Main Street, has donated an easement to Howard County Conservancy that prevents further development on the land. It's a surprising reversal that illustrates the possibility of preservation - even in Howard County, where land values are continuously escalating.

For Granville "Sonny" Wehland, the election of Barack Obama vindicated his efforts in the name of civil rights four decades ago. In the 1960s, Wehland worked with the late Sen. James Clark Jr. to garner support for anti-discrimination legislation that would allow blacks to enter public places in Maryland. A lifelong Democrat and ardent Obama supporter, Wehland said he didn't understand then - just as he can't comprehend now - why anyone cared about the color of someone's skin. James Clark Jr. is a familiar name to many because of his 28 years in the state legislature and his bustling farm in central Howard County. Now that name will be part of the landscape of Howard Community College, gleaming on the side of the library building in the center of campus. The college renamed the building yesterday - the first built on the Columbia campus more than 30 years ago - in honor of Clark, who was an early supporter of the school. He introduced legislation that gave the school its board of trustees after the county Board of Education bought the land and started construction.

Havre de Grace. -- Old Bay Farm, this past Tuesday, could hardly have looked lovelier. The grass was freshly cut, the forsythia yellow.Bill James had loved and labored over this place, his home for his entire adult life and a good part of his childhood. He would have been pleased that it looked so fine for the assemblage of old friends who came to visit on the day of his funeral.
