Free-agent pitcher Kevin Millwood reached a preliminary agreement on a five-year, $60 million contract with Texas, giving the Rangers the legitimate No. 1 starter they have been seeking. Texas can void the fifth year of the deal if Millwood doesn't pitch a certain number of innings in earlier years of the contract. Millwood, who had drawn interest from the Orioles, is expected to undergo a physical today, and the deal likely will be finalized tomorrow. Details of the deal were disclosed by two people familiar with negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract had not been finalized.

The Oakland Athletics have a tradition during spring training. Each day, a new player is introduced, and for a few minutes there's an impromptu question-and-answer session. Normally, it lasts 10 minutes. February's introduction of A's designated hitter Frank Thomas took about 45 minutes. To be fair, it was raining that morning, so there was no rush to leave the clubhouse. But that's not the main reason the young A's stayed. "A lot of players wanted to get into his mind," said manager Ken Macha.

Yankees lost ground Mandy Housenick The Morning Call Of the 2009 playoff teams, the World Series champion Yankees have the most questions, especially considering how well the hated Red Sox did in the offseason (acquiring John Lackey, Adrian Beltre and Mike Cameron). The Yankees lost Johnny Damon and now field an outfield of Curtis Granderson, coming off his worst season; erratic Nick Swisher; and either untested Brett Gardner or aging Randy Winn. They have a soon-to-be 38-year-old Andy Pettitte, a soon-to-be 34-year-old Javier Vazquez (who flamed out in his previous Bronx stint)

NEW YORK - There will come a day when New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter discovers that his season won't always extend into October, won't always include champagne on ice, won't always contain more hugs and high-fives than disappointments. Maybe next season, though Jeter's on such a roll that it may take longer to stop it. Jeter sat in the Yankees' dugout during the 1995 American League Division Series against Seattle, excluded from the playoff roster as Tony Fernandez started at shortstop and the Mariners advanced to the next round.

CLEVELAND -- A house that has been filled with horrors shouldn't seem quite so scary to the Orioles, even with all the ghosts swirling around it. Yet, somehow, it still does. The floor boards still creak, objects move by themselves, and players run screaming into the night -- mostly out of frustration. The stands at Jacobs Field weren't even half full last night. Fans of the Cleveland Indians don't burst through the gates anymore to watch Jim Thome, Kenny Lofton or Albert Belle. They won't find Manny Ramirez or Sandy Alomar, either, and they needed a program to identify the starting pitcher, rookie Jason Davis, who began last season at Single-A.

CLEVELAND - Leading off the ninth inning of a tie game last night, Melvin Mora wanted to show restraint. Forget about swinging for the fences, a tendency that brought criticism within the organization last season as his average tumbled. Just get on base, he thought, as pitcher Danys Baez gripped the ball and stared in for the sign. Set the table for someone else. On the fourth pitch, Mora homered. "That was an accident," he said. It was a timely one. Without really trying, Mora had completed the Orioles' late rally, which produced a 4-3 victory over the Cleveland Indians at Jacobs Field and changed an entire series.

Indians relievers have allowed just one run in their past 16 2/3 innings, which included a scoreless streak of 13 2/3 innings that ended yesterday. They still are just 10-for-24 in save chances, and Jose Jimenez is their third closer of the season.
