The boos from another sparse Camden Yards crowd cascaded down on the Orioles early last night, first for a poor pitching performance by Bruce Chen, then for a series of defensive lapses that turned an already lopsided game into a comedy of errors from the home team. Short-handed because of a beat-up bullpen, the Orioles could ill afford a short outing by Chen, an anemic offensive effort and a porous defensive one, but they got all three in a 15-1 drubbing by the Cleveland Indians that was easily the club's most troubling performance of the season.

They needed their starter to stifle a tough offense and their best hitters to string together a few big innings. They needed to end a four-game losing streak in which they'd been blown out twice. Orioles@Indians Today, 1:05 p.m., Ch. 13, 1090 AM Starters: Orioles' Rodrigo Lopez (5-10, 6.92) vs. Indians' Jake Westbrook (7-4, 4.09)

Chicago White Sox Record, finish: 83-79, 2nd. Manager: Ozzie Guillen, 2nd season with Sox. Payroll: $76 million. Hot seat: Jermaine Dye. Steps into the void left by the departure of Magglio Ordonez. Best case: Scott Podsednik and Tadahito Iguchi transform a previously station-to-station lineup. ... Adding Dustin Hermanson to an already-solid bullpen makes it a bigger team strength. ...
