NEW YORK - The body is strong and, if the fates are willing, Pete Sampras says he has a shot at this U.S. Open and his 14th Grand Slam title. Is it just talk? Sampras hopes not. While Wimbledon has been the sweetheart tournament of his career, bringing him seven of his record 13 major titles, some of his most impressive performances have come here at Flushing Meadows, where he has won four times. Who can forget the dramatic win over Alex Corretja during which Sampras threw up into a courtside flowerpot?

Just as Robert Campbell finished counting to 10, his daughter, Jaden, stuffed Cuddlies - her favorite teddy bear - under a pillow. Then Robert picked up a stuffed dog named Casper and began to search for Jaden's furry friend. "Am I getting hot?" Campbell asked a stuffed Eeyore sitting on the couch, in a high-pitched voice. "I haven't seen Cuddlies in two years," said the 5-year-old in a slow, drawn-out voice that mimicked the Winnie the Pooh character. But Campbell didn't buy it. "Beep, beep, beep, beep," he said, as he lifted the pillow next to Eeyore and found Cuddlies.

WASHINGTON - After leading Notre Dame to the 2000-2001 NCAA women's basketball championship, Niele Ivey had a decent rookie season as backup point guard for the WNBA's Indiana Fever. Ivey's average of 3.6 points and 2.2 assists, while playing in all 32 games, was a nice start. But Indiana coach Nell Fortner noticed Ivey lacked some of the quickness she had shown in college. It wasn't until an exit interview at the end of the season that the coach discovered why. Niele (pronounced knee-ELL)
