When Paul "Tank" Younger set out from Grambling State in 1949 for what was then uncharted territory in the NFL, he carried the biggest burden of any free-agent rookie in the league. He carried the hopes of his race.At the time, no player from a black college had ever made an NFL team. Indeed, only a handful of select black players had been able to break professional football's color line.So here was Younger, a 21-year-old running back fresh out of a small, black, Southern college, about to enter a world he had only heard about.

Three men with local ties will be inducted into the Black College Football Hall of Fame as part of the 2011 class. Former Morgan State coach Earl Banks and offensive tackle Roosevelt Brown will join Art Shell, who was an offensive tackle at UMES when it was Maryland State College, in the hall's second class, it was announced Thursday. Banks spent 14 years as Morgan's coach, amassing an .839 win-loss percentage. He was Morgan's athletic director from 1970 to 1983 and died in 1993. Brown, a Black All-American in 1951 and 1952, was a member of the NFL's 75th Anniversary All-Time Team.

Five people remained hospitalized today from injuries suffered in a two-vehicle collision that shut down Interstate 795 and blocked the Baltimore Metro for more than two hours yesterday during the afternoon traffic rush hour.Three of the injured were riding in the bed of a pickup truck, which broke off and went down a 30-foot embankment. In all, seven were injured in the 4:30 p.m. accident -- five of six men riding in the truck, along with the driver and passenger of a 1990 Mazda. Four of the six men still were in the Shock-Trauma Unit in Baltimore today, while the Mazda passenger remained at Baltimore County General Hospital in Randallstown.
