The Orioles opted for experience in one case and youth in the other when they pared two players yesterday to reach the 25-player Opening Day roster limit. For the 10th spot on the active pitching staff, veteran Mark Williamson won out over rookie Mike Oquist, who was optioned to Triple-A Rochester despite his impressive spring performance. But the club went for 23-year-old outfielder Damon Buford as the final position player over former Oriole Rene Gonzales, a nonroster invitee who was trying to stick as a spare infielder.

The first full week of play in the Puerto Rican winter league was mixed for Orioles players.Outfielder Damon Buford and pitcher Brad Pennington struggled mightily, and third baseman Leo Gomez showed signs of bouncing back from his late-season wrist injury.Buford, who spent most of the year on the Orioles' major-league roster without getting a lot of playing time, exhibited some signs of rust, managing just four hits in 30 at-bats in eight games for Santurce.Gomez, a teammate of Buford's with Santurce, was 9-for-27 with one homer and six RBIs in his first eight games.

On the field: There was an Earl Weaver sighting in Baltimore yesterday, and naturally, there was umpire controversy in last night's game. Orioles center fielder Brady Anderson hit a high fly to deep right in the fourth inning. Danny Bautista leaped against the fence reaching for the ball, which, as the replay showed, bounced off the very top of the right-field fence. First base umpire Jim McKean, running out to the outfield, called a homer as Anderson raced around the bases, stopping at third.
