Del. Jolene Ivey was elected to chair the all-Democratic Prince George's County House delegation Wednesday, succeeding Del. Melony Griffith. Ivey, 51. was first elected in 2007 and had previously served as second vice-chair. The Prince George's delegation is the House's second-largest, with 23 members, and often plays a pivotal role in close votes. Griffith, 49, has served two two-year terms as delegation chief. The delegation has a tradition of limiting the chairmanship to two terms.

Former Prince George's County State's Attorney Glenn F. Ivey filed the paperwork Thursday required to challenge incumbent Rep. Donna F. Edwards, setting up what is likely to be one of Maryland's most competitive Democratic primaries next year. Ivey, 50, won countywide elections in Prince George's in 2002 and 2006 by wide margins. He will be a formidable challenger in the 4th District, which now includes a large swath of central Anne Arundel County. Ivey has been in private practice since leaving the state's attorney's office in January.

Former Prince George's County prosecutor Glenn Ivey is pulling out of the race for Maryland's 4th Congressional District.  Ivey had announced in November that he expected to challenge Democratic Rep. Donna Edwards in the newly drawn 4th District, which now includes a large swath of Anne Arundel County. He had filed with the Federal Election Commission and was raising money for the race.  “We projected out how much we could raise on the track that we were on and realized that we couldn't raise enough to win,” Ivey said, noting that the campaign had raised about $160,000 so far. “I knew what I had to do and I didn't get it done.” Though two other Democrats have filed for the race, Ivey -- because of his base of support in Prince George's County -- presented the biggest threat.  Ivey had not filed to put his name on the ballot.

Jean Eichelberger Ivey does not pay heed to astrology, bu she is the sort of person whose life is governed by the stars. That's why she lives near the Hayden Planetarium in New York ("It's very convenient," she says); that's why she went to New Zealand five years ago ("the southern hemisphere was the best place to see Halley's comet"); that's why she's going to Hawaii nextyear ("solar eclipses aren't exactly every day occurrences"); and that's why Ivey, a distinguished composer on the faculty of the Peabody Institute, has named her recent piece for solo cello and orchestra, "Voyager."

Prince George's County State's Attorney Glenn F. Ivey could wind up on a ticket as a running mate with a Democratic candidate for governor, but he hasn't been offered a spot yet. Ivey shot down yesterday a published report that Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley had selected him to run as lieutenant governor with him next year. The mayor's campaign also dismissed the report, which first appeared in the Washington-area Gazette newspapers this week and was attributed to anonymous sources. "Martin hasn't offered that, and I haven't made any decisions about what I want to do," said Ivey, who raised money for his campaign account at a fundraiser in Baltimore last night that the mayor was scheduled to attend.

The race for the 4th District seat held by U.S. Rep. Donna F. Edwards has grown increasingly crowded in recent days, as two possible Democratic candidates have said they are considering challenging the Prince George's Democrat in the primary. A spokesman for former Prince George's County State's Attorney Glenn Ivey said he is eyeing a run, and last week, Anne Arundel County Council member Jamie Benoit, whose district includes Laurel, announced he had formed an exploratory committee for a possible run in District 4. In Gov. Martin O'Malley's redistricting plans approved by the Maryland General Assembly this month, District 4 was reconfigured, moving nearly all of Laurel out of Rep. Steny Hoyer's District 5 and into District 4. Large swaths of Anne Arundel County were also added to District 4, which also includes parts of Prince George's County outside Laurel.

Vigilantism is an ugly word, but it's one that's been on people's minds ever since the death under suspicious circumstances of Ronnie L. White last June in a Prince George's County detention facility. Mr. White had been brought there on a Friday, accused of killing a county police officer, Cpl. Richard S. Findley, during a botched carjacking. By Sunday, Mr. White was dead, after jail guards reportedly found him lying unconscious in his maximum-security cell. The county medical examiner ruled the death a homicide when an autopsy revealed broken bones in the prisoner's neck, indicating he had been strangled.

The chief prosecutor in Prince George's County says he does not intend to charge anyone now in the death last year of a 19-year-old inmate who had been accused of killing a police officer, meaning a slaying once denounced by the county executive as "vigilante justice" is all but certain to go unpunished in state court. State's Attorney Glenn F. Ivey said that after nearly a year of investigation, he does not have enough evidence to secure an indictment in the death of Ronnie L. White. In an interview, Ivey endorsed calls by civil rights leaders for the Justice Department to take over the case, and a Justice spokesman said federal authorities would review the investigation.
