Notre Dame's habit of living dangerously backfired on the team. After registering back-to-back overtime wins against Penn State and North Carolina, the No. 3 Fighting Irish dropped an 8-7 decision to No. 20 Hofstra last Saturday. It is Notre Dame's first loss in four contests, but coach Kevin Corrigan - and perhaps his health - would prefer a few games where the outcome isn't as tight. “If you said to me that I could win every game between now and the end of the year and never come close to anybody, I'd take it, but I don't think that's the case,” he said Monday morning.

This is the time of year when I feel a bit tweedy, a bit green in the wool, a bit Irish, even though the Rodricks clan from which I descend was Portuguese (Rodrigues) and not Irish (Roderick). From years of experience, I know something about the wide interest in things Irish - this tendency the non-Irish have to identify with the freckled people. It's a seasonal condition. St. Patrick's Day, falling as it does on the cusp of spring, catches even the most miserable among us in a hopeful and ready mood.

He's across the Atlantic from his native Ireland, but Ken Keady was wearing the green Sunday as he bobbed his 3-year-old daughter on his shoulders to see Baltimore's St. Patrick Parade. "It's a great occasion, a lot of color, a lot of flags and lot of music. I come every year," said Keady, now of Towson, with daughter Carolyn waving the Irish flag above his head. Keady pronounced Baltimore's parade as "one of the best I've ever seen" - and he's seen them in Dublin, he said. The Keady family was among thousands of people lining the route for the kilted bagpipe bands and eye-popping string bands, dance troupes, students, classic cars, floats and more.

When Irish novelist Colum McCann reads from his work as part of the Howard County Poetry and Literature Society's 35th Irish Evening on Friday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Howard Community College's Smith Theatre, the audience has a right to be in a green mood. By way of colorful thoughts engendered by this festive evening of Irish literature, music and dance, they also might want to think about red, white and blue. McCann's writing has a lot to say about the United States, where he has set some of his novels and now lives.

A goal from freshman attackman Matt Kavanagh with 1:34 left in the first overtime period gave the No. 4 Notre Dame men's lacrosse team a 10-9 win over host No. 9 Penn State on Sunday afternoon. A late flurry from both teams sent the game — which had been moved inside Holuba Hall because of frigid weather — into the extra session. Notre Dame tied the contest at 8 with 24 seconds left on a goal by Conor Doyle (Gilman), which was his career-high third of the day. Ryan Foley assisted on the score.

Occasionally this column takes a look at what happened to a person or thing that was a memorable part of Laurel's past. This month it looks at two Laurel icons from the late 1960s and early 1970s. Laurel High coach set the standard Laurel High School was never known for fielding excellent football teams. Ron Ladue changed that. Ladue inherited a football program that was not expected to win. But Ladue's teams did win and changed the expectations for Laurel High.
