Like a lot of other coaches, Jimmy Patsos is big on inspirational sayings. On Sunday, he needed one in the worst way. Not a "Braveheart" quote, exactly. Not something to make a man want to take a spear in the throat for his homeland. More like something to make a 20-year-old with a short attention span focus, or something to help a college basketball player suck it up and not dwell on the past. The Loyola men's basketball team, after all, was on a two-game losing streak. Sure, the Greyhounds' goal of winning the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and going to the NCAA tournament was still in sight.

The Loyola men's basketball team has played some great games as they've risen to the top of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference standings. Sunday's game at Reitz Arena will not be regarded as one of them. Down by just four at the half, the Greyhounds (19-6, 12-3) were out-rebounded, out-hustled and out-everything-elsed in a MAAC loss to Fairfield (15-10, 10-4) 68-51. Erik Etherly and Robert Olson lead the Greyhounds with 17 points apiece. Rakim Sanders led a very balanced Fairfield team with 13 points.

The Loyola men's basketball team has been thinking about its rematch with Iona since losing to the Gaels in New Rochelle, N.Y., more than three weeks ago. Greyhounds coach Jimmy Patsos has been thinking about a game like Friday night's for a lot longer -- eight years. While an 87-81 victory at sold-out Reitz Arena helped erase the memories of an 11-point defeat to the Gaels -- and broke a tie for first place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference -- it also put an uphill climb in perspective for Patsos, a former longtime assistant under Gary Williams at Maryland.

Maryland coach Mark Turgeon spoke to his team for a long time in the locker room after Maryland's 89-63 loss to Iona -- a game in which the Terps had 26 turnovers. But when the coach emerged, he was no less frustrated. Turgeon, who has had to endure kidney stones this weekend, can be very candid. He tends to speak his mind. Here is some of what he said at his post-game briefing. He was a portrait of frustration. At times, he literally lowered his head and stared at the floor.

Turnovers, rushed shots, foul trouble and a kidney stone. Maryland coach Mark Turgeon endured it all during one harrowing Sunday in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off that ended with the coach blasting players for repeatedly not running plays correctly and for "a lack of commitment there to what we're trying to do. " Turgeon felt ill enough that he had to cancel a media session the day before the game, and it was questionable whether he'd be on the sideline Sunday...
