The Lions were ranked 12th in the preseason after a strong finish to their 8-8 season in 2011. Randisi, in her second year, built on that, guiding the Lions to a 13-4 record, the No. 2 ranking and an appearance in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference final, where they lost, 12-11, to No. 1 McDonogh. Randisi, 28, said her players bought into her system, including running a motion attack and relying on a sliding defense. They also believed they could play with the best and showed more poise as the season progressed.

Senior Hannah Hartman led the way for the Blazers, scoring a game-high 13 points while classmate Mattie Milchling snared nine rebounds and junior point guard Sydney Tommins added seven assists in the quarterfinal victory. NDP jumped out to a 21-5 lead after successive three-pointers by Tommins and senior guard Becky Felmeister near the end of the opening period, although junior guard Caroline Federico answered for Maryvale with a swish from beyond the arc at the buzzer.

Shortly after the 100 minutes of boys soccer was completed at McDonogh, where the Eagles took on defending Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference champion Gilman in a rematch of last year's title game, it was apparent Monday's 0-0 overtime tie elicited two different responses. The No. 2 Greyhounds left satisfied, brilliantly defending against the potent Eagles' offense with a collectively strong front that simply wouldn't bend. For the No. 1 Eagles, who carried the play for most of the game only to be bottled up every time they got close to goal, the frustration was clear.
