Delmarva Shorebirds shortstop Matt Tucker said he doesn't come to the ballpark every day thinking about his batting average or any other statistics. "I'm here to make it to the major leagues," the Aurora, Colo., native said Friday afternoon from Lexington, Ky., where he was waiting to play the Legends. "That's what we're all here for." Tucker, 24, said the Single-A Shorebirds' emphasis is on winning and not "whether I hit .300 or .250." Tucker leads the Shorebirds this season with a .309 batting average in 28 games.

While this year's top draft pick, catcher Matt Wieters, continues to work out with the Aberdeen IronBirds before playing in Hawaii later this month, the Orioles' first selection in 2006 is concluding a season that started late but had decent results. Third baseman Bill Rowell was batting .273 in 89 games at Single-A Delmarva before yesterday, with 21 doubles, three triples, eight homers, 56 RBIs and a .422 slugging percentage. He hit safely in five of seven games. Rowell was trying to make up for lost time after a strained oblique muscle kept him at extended spring training.

Jason Dubois made it through the Florida portion of spring training with his health intact, which would have been perfect if there hadn't also been a Norfolk, Va., portion. Dubois pulled his hamstring while running out a ground ball during an exhibition game against the Washington Nationals that was played at the home of the Orioles' new Triple-A affiliate. He went on the disabled list, which delayed his debut with the Tides. Back in the lineup and making up for lost time, Dubois is starting to heat up. He also is giving the Orioles another name to consider if they want to add a right-handed hitter to a lineup that often lacks punch.

Bill Rowell, who quickly emerged as one of the Orioles' top prospects after being taken with the ninth overall pick in last year's draft, is nearing his first at-bats of the 2007 season. Rowell remains at extended spring training in Sarasota, Fla., the only competition he's had because of a strained oblique muscle. He could be assigned to low Single-A Delmarva later this week because of the significant progress he's making. "He's doing real well, from everything I hear," said Dean Albany, the scout who signed Rowell.

When Joe Jordan worked as the national crosschecker in the Florida Marlins' scouting department, he tried to persuade high school outfielder Brandon Tripp to sign a professional contract. He offered plenty of good reasons - six figures' worth of them - but Tripp was determined to play at Cal State Fullerton. In one of baseball's interesting twists, Jordan was hired as the Orioles' director of scouting in November 2004. And he drafted Tripp again two years later. Jordan is reminded of these events because Tripp won't let him forget.
