Anne Arundel County Fire Department officials say a fire in a vacant building in Glen Burnie on Monday resulted in no injuries, but caused an estimated $10,000 in damage. At about 5:30 p.m., county fire officials received multiple 911 calls reporting a building fire in the 400 block of Crain Highway North. Responding units saw fire from the second floor of the vacant two-story building, officials said, and elevated it to a second alarm, bringing some 50 firefighters to the scene.

A head-on collision on U.S. 50 west of Annapolis early Saturday morning left four people injured — one with life-threatening injuries — a Maryland State Police official said. State police said alcohol was a factor in the crash, which occurred about 4:45 a.m. near the intersection with Interstate 97. A vehicle traveling in the wrong direction on the westbound side of U.S. 50 struck a Ford Mustang with three occupants head-on, causing the car to flip over. Police described the driver of the eastbound vehicle, a Nissan Altima, as a 36-year-old male from Temple Hills, and said charges of driving while intoxicated and other counts were pending.

Stephen Banick made an impressive debut a week ago, recording a game-high seven points in No. 7 Stevenson's 11-5 victory over No. 17 Haverford. But for a while, the freshman attackman wasn't sure he would play lacrosse again after suffering injuries and dealing with frustration. Two years ago, Banick broke his right arm twice in his senior year at Charlotte Catholic in North Carolina. Having already committed to Bellarmine, Banick wasn't too worried about missing a year of lacrosse, but he then tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during fall workouts and missed his first season with the Knights.

The Orioles have eight players on the disabled list, and Friday night's lineup against the Rays wasn't even remotely close to the one Buck Showalter trotted out on Opening Day. This week, the Orioles might have received their worse injury setback, losing Nick Markakis for at least three to four weeks as he recovers from surgery to remove a broken part of the hamate bone in his right wrist. And following the Orioles 5-0 loss to Tampa Bay at Tropicana Field, Baltimore fell out of first place in the AL East for the first time since May 5. The Orioles hope it's not the last time they see the top of the division.

The Orioles could be racing to fill their roster after injuries to two key starters on Thursday. First baseman Mark Reynolds took a pitch to the outside of his left hand, but remained in the game after several minutes of being checked out by head trainer Richie Bancells. Following the game, his thumb was visibly swollen beneath a huge ice wrap, but he said he was confident nothing was broken and that he'd be able to play Friday. "You know, I'm sure it will be sore in the morning," Reynolds said.

Is this the year their aging defense finally kicks the bucket? How will they survive without the face of the defense in the huddle every Sunday? Can they get their once-feared pass rush back? Sound familiar? Since they reported for training camp in late July, the Pittsburgh Steelers have had to defend themselves against similar questions to the ones that have dogged the Ravens (7-2) over the past 3 1/2 months. But unlike their AFC North rivals from Baltimore, whom they will host at Heinz Field on Sunday night, the Steelers (6-3)

Ravens safeties Christian Thompson and Omar Brown were stretching after a recent practice when Thompson realized that they might be asked to play the entire preseason finale against the St. Louis Rams on Thursday night. “We were just joking about it while we were stretching,” Thompson said. “We were saying, 'We've got to get ready,' because that includes special teams. So it could be a long four quarters on Thursday. But if that's how it's going to play out, we've just got to prepare and make the most of our opportunities.” Added Brown: “It kind of hit me today, and that's why we were doing a little bit of extra running after practice.” Thompson and Brown might be pressed into lengthier duty because of a sudden lack of depth in the safety corps.
