What's that old saying? “If I didn't have bad luck, I'd have no luck at all.” After losing its second starting quarterback to the same injury -- an anterior cruciate ligament tear -- Maryland is left to start again at quarterback. I'll have a story for tomorrow's paper on the two guys left standing -- Caleb Rowe and Devin Burns. They are very different sorts of players. Rowe is a pocket passer. Two teammates described him to me today as a "gunslinger" because of the way he whips the ball downfield during two-minute drills in practice.

John Kaestner's two-goal outburst in No. 2 Johns Hopkins' 10-8 victory over Princeton was surprising in that the junior attackman had never scored a goal prior to Friday night. But as far as Blue Jays coach Dave Pietramala is concerned, Kaestner - who made his first career start in place of freshman Wells Stanwick - was simply doing what he had been coached to do. “We've always tried to have a next-man-up mentality and tried to encourage everybody to work as hard as they can to be prepared for when their opportunity comes,” Pietramala said Monday morning.

Few IndyCar drivers are more reserved and soft-spoken than Mike Conway, a 27-year-old Englishman who prefers to let his driving do the talking. His skill spoke loud and clear Sunday as Conway, rebounding from serious injuries suffered in a horrific crash at last year's Indianapolis 500, won the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach — his first victory in the Izod IndyCar Series in 26 starts. "The car was just on fire, really, at the end," said Conway, who drives for Andretti Autosport, the team co-owned by former racer Michael Andretti.

Less than a week after Ravens coach John Harbaugh candidly said that Sergio Kindle hadn't performed well enough in practice to gain a spot on the game-day roster in the first three contests of the season, the outside linebacker made his NFL debut in Sunday night's 34-17 victory over the New York Jets. Kindle, a second-round pick in 2010 who sat out the entire season after fracturing his skull before the start of his first training camp, was mostly limited to special teams duties, but he did rush the passer on the Jets' final two offensive snaps late in the fourth quarter.

Frostburg State has been dealt a pair of blows, and the season hasn't even started. A pair of starters in junior midfielder Lucas Flaig and sophomore defenseman Zach Burkhardt have been lost for the season after sustaining injuries. Flaig underwent hip surgery last Friday, while Burkhardt had surgery to repair a broken foot. Flaig finished 2011 ranked second on the team in goals with 24. During ESPN's telecast of Maryland's eventual 12-8 loss to Virginia last Saturday, analysts Matt Ward and Ryan Boyle mentioned Curtis Holmes' battle with minor injuries. On Tuesday, Terps coach John Tillman confirmed that those unspecified ailments have affected the junior faceoff specialist's play this season. “In our opinion, it seems like it comes back to that,” Tillman said. “We've studied film from last year and this year, and we keep coming back to, 'We're probably getting everybody's best efforts,' whereas last year, Curtis was kind of the unknown.

Johns Hopkins' 12-4 record last season disguised a matter that troubles every coach but has few solutions: injuries. Four starters missed extended time in 2012 because of a variety of ailments. Attackman Chris Boland - who has since graduated - sat out eight starts after breaking his collarbone in the team's season-opening win against Towson, and then-junior midfielder John Greeley was sidelined for the final four contests after re-tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

First, Maryland tight end Will Yeatman broke a finger . Then fellow tight end Devonte Campbell went down with an assortment of injuries, beginning with a concussion. Now it's believed that tight end Dave Stinebaugh (Perry Hall) has a medial collateral ligament injury. "If it's not operated on, they think [he's out] four to six weeks," coach Ralph Friedgen said Wednesday during his Atlantic Coast Conference media conference call. Stinebaugh, a redshirt freshman, had moved up the depth chart because of injuries to others, and has impressed coaches.
