Ray Lewis will not play in Sunday's regular-season finale against the Cincinnati Bengals but the Ravens kept alive his hope of returning for the playoffs. The Ravens activated the veteran linebacker from the injured reserve with a designation to return list on Wednesday, a procedural move that makes him eligible to play in the opening round of the playoffs next week against either the Bengals or Indianapolis Colts. To make room for Lewis, the Ravens placed wide receiver LaQuan Williams (Poly, University of Maryland)

The Ravens continued to tinker with their secondary today as they placed rookie safety Christian Thompson on injured reserve and elevated safety Anthony Levine to their 53-man roster. Levine had been on the Ravens' practice squad. Levine, 25, spent the majority of the 2010-11 seasons on the practice squad of the Green Bay Packers and has yet to play in an NFL game. Thompson, a fourth-round pick, appeared on special teams in seven games this season. He was put on injured reserve with a knee injury.

After a considerable amount of haggling, the NFL Management Council and NFL Players Association have agreed to move back the NFL trading deadline and adopt a new rule allowing teams to activate one player from injured reserve. The trading deadline has been shifted back from Oct. 16 to Oct. 30, the NFL and the players' union jointly announced Thursday afternoon. The deadline is now on a Tuesday following the eighth week of the regular season. Because the injured reserve rule change was adopted following the roster cutdown to 75 players, the NFL and the NFLPA agreed to a transition procedure that allows teams to return to their 53-player active roster list one player that was already placed on injured reserve since training camp started.

As he watched the 2011 campaign unfold while sitting on injured reserve for the second time in as many years, Ramon Harewood said he was driven by one thought: proving the Ravens that they made the right decision when they used a sixth-round pick on him in the 2010 draft. “In my head, I'm thinking that they saw something in me,” he recalled after Tuesday's practice at the team's headquarters in Owings Mills. “So my thought process was, 'Get back on the field and do what you're supposed to do.' Right now, that's what I'm trying to do.” The 6-foot-6, 334-pound Harewood is currently a backup tackle.

Ravens tight end Todd Heap will be a game-time decision for Sunday's game against the Cleveland Browns. Heap, who has missed the past two games with a pulled right hamstring, has practiced on a limited basis for three straight days and is listed as questionable. He told coach John Harbaugh he felt "very good. " "I think we'll wait until game time just to see for sure," Harbaugh said after Friday's practice, "and see how it feels up there with the weather [in Cleveland]

As safety Ed Reed and linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo begin their season, Jared Gaither's career with the Ravens could be over. Gaither, the team's former starting left tackle, was placed on injured reserve as the Ravens made room for Reed and Ayanbadejo, who were activated off the physically-unable-to-perform list Saturday. The Ravens also cut versatile linebacker Edgar Jones. It's been a difficult season for Gaither, who is known for his intriguing potential and questionable work ethic.
