ASHBURN, Va. -- The Washington Redskins found another hurdle in their difficult obstacle course yesterday. The Redskins, already coping with the burden of being defending champions, lost another starter when center Jeff Bostic was placed on the injured-reserve list with a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder. When Bostic suffered the injury late in the second period Sunday, the Redskins thought it was just a sprained shoulder.By Tuesday, they upgraded it to a sprained rotator cuff and said he'd be out for at least a game.

Ravens reserve wide receiver LaQuan Williams' spirit brought him to this day, reaching football's ultimate game in just his second NFL season. Unfortunately for Williams, the former University of Maryland and Poly High School standout won't actually be playing against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII at New Orleans' Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Williams was placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury suffered in the regular-season finale against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Ravens on Friday made a roster move before Saturday's playoff game in Denver, placing injured offensive lineman Jah Reid on injured reserve and activating rookie cornerback Asa Jackson to their 53-man roster. Reid missed last weekend's wild-card win against the Indianapolis Colts with a toe injury, and he did not participate in practice at all this week. Reid started seven games at left guard this season and played in nine games overall. With Reid out against the Colts, the Ravens started Bryant McKinnie at left tackle, moved Michael Oher to right tackle and shifted rookie Kelechi Osemele, a second-round pick, to Reid's spot at guard.

After a considerable amount of haggling, the NFL Management Council and NFL Players Association have agreed to move back the NFL trading deadline and adopt a new rule allowing teams to activate one player from injured reserve. The trading deadline has been shifted back from Oct. 16 to Oct. 30, the NFL and the players' union jointly announced Thursday afternoon. The deadline is now on a Tuesday following the eighth week of the regular season. Because the injured reserve rule change was adopted following the roster cutdown to 75 players, the NFL and the NFLPA agreed to a transition procedure that allows teams to return to their 53-player active roster list one player that was already placed on injured reserve since training camp started.

As he watched the 2011 campaign unfold while sitting on injured reserve for the second time in as many years, Ramon Harewood said he was driven by one thought: proving the Ravens that they made the right decision when they used a sixth-round pick on him in the 2010 draft. “In my head, I'm thinking that they saw something in me,” he recalled after Tuesday's practice at the team's headquarters in Owings Mills. “So my thought process was, 'Get back on the field and do what you're supposed to do.' Right now, that's what I'm trying to do.” The 6-foot-6, 334-pound Harewood is currently a backup tackle.

As safety Ed Reed and linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo begin their season, Jared Gaither's career with the Ravens could be over. Gaither, the team's former starting left tackle, was placed on injured reserve as the Ravens made room for Reed and Ayanbadejo, who were activated off the physically-unable-to-perform list Saturday.
