The Washington Bullets resolved their 13th-man problem yesterday by placing free-agent guard Doug Overton on the five-game injured list to begin the season.Overton, who joined the team only three weeks ago after playing this summer for Sydney in the Australian Basketball League, is suffering from a badly bruised toe and tendinitis in his right Achilles' tendon. The former La Salle star, who was drafted and cut by the Detroit Pistons just before last season, has impressed Bullets coaches with his shooting and ball-handling skills and is viewed as a possible backup to point guard Michael Adams.

Up until yesterday afternoon, there was still a chance that Pervis Ellison would be in a Washington Bullets uniform when the season opens Friday, still a chance that coach Wes Unseld could begin working with the front line he has looked forward to meshing together. But after an examination with Dr. Steve Haas yesterday, the news about Ellison was not good -- the 6-foot-10 forward has not adequately recovered from off-season surgery on both knees, and thus will start the season on the injured list.

WASHINGTON - If you didn't know better, you'd swear Gilbert Arenas is on the Washington Wizards' active roster, because he is around the team, bounding around MCI Center with the energy of a colt and holding court with anyone who will listen. It's only on game nights, when Arenas is in street clothes and the Wizards are without his 18.2 points, five rebounds and endless energy, that his absence is acutely felt. "It's really hard sitting out there and watching, when I know I could be out there, and seeing some of the players on the opposite team being cocky," Arenas said.

MIAMI - For the second time in his legendary career, Michael Jordan may go on the injured list. Jordan, who missed the last six minutes of the Washington Wizards' 92-80 loss to the Miami Heat last night, said that his knee, which was drained just before game time, may force him to miss Wednesday's home game against the Portland Trail Blazers, as well as take a turn on the injured list, a stay that would last at least five games. "That [injured list] could be a very strong possibility," said Jordan after the game.
