Vince Ciattei Perry Hall, senior After earning a spot on the All-Metro first team for cross country in the fall and indoor track in the winter, Ciattei took an extra step this spring. The senior dominated the competition in outdoor track and field, winning all of his 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs in his final high school season. Ciattei won the Class 4A races for the 800 and 1,600 in the state championships at Morgan State last month, but he didn't take part in the 3,200 at that meet.

"Howard County is loosening its tie a little bit," said Bill Erskine, a land-use lawyer who loosened his neckwear and donned a crash helmet during last Thursday's business mixer, sponsored by the Howard County Economic Development Authority.

At the state championships, she tied a meet record with her time of 7.08 seconds in the 55-meter dash, and also won the 300 and placed third in the 55 hurdles.

When all of us left the Fifth Regiment Armory very late Wednesday night after Baltimore City's Indoor Track and Field Championships finally ended, a lot of questions still remained.  Because of a timing system malfunction that led to computer and scoring glitches, some events needed to be checked over again. The No. 4 Western girls and Digital Harbor's boys both had big leads and were awarded the first-place trophies, but the final scores weren't known since the results to certain events needed to be re-checked.

Abby Culp never realized how much she loved running until she couldn't do it any more. After her freshman cross country season at Winters Mill, Culp's family moved to Florida for six months, and she had to take a break from running during a brief struggle with an eating disorder. Back in Carroll County at Manchester Valley, she got back into serious running as a junior. Brad Duvall Hereford Duvall guided the Bulls to the Class 3A state title for the second consecutive year, using a lot of talented athletes to give Hereford its scoring punch. This winter, the Bulls won their seventh straight Baltimore County title and third consecutive Class 3A Central regional meet before ending the season with the state championship. The Hereford girls had never won an indoor track state title before last year. "No coach can be successful without amazing athletes, and we are lucky to have supremely talented and hard-working kids that follow the long-term plans of the coaching staff," Duvall said.
