INDIANAPOLIS -- For a pair of the nation's top swimmers, the chlorine that was in the air in the Indiana University Natatorium proved to be much thicker than any competitive tensions. Michael Phelps, from Rodgers Forge, and Towson's Katie Hoff each raced in an "off" event on the opening day of the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships and while neither walked away with a gold medal yesterday, each posted a personal-best time. ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships Through Saturday, Indianapolis Today: Michael Phelps takes on Ryan Lochte in the 200-meter backstroke.

Beatrice Miller, a former director of Nursing at Sinai Hospital and instructor at the College of Notre Dame in Baltimore, died of congestive heart failure Thursday at Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center & Hospital. The Mount Washington resident was 87. Born in Chicago, Beatrice Stern grew up in Hammond, Ind. She graduated from St. Margaret's School of Nursing there before earning three degrees from Indiana University, including an education doctorate in nursing. "Her big thing was education," said her husband of 51 years, Dr. David I. Miller, a retired internist.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Former Vice President Dan Quayle, who was hospitalized here a week ago after blood clots were discovered in his lungs, will be restricted to light activity and no air travel for at least a month, his doctors say.Yesterday's prognosis could delay the announcement of his expected Republican presidential bid, which had been anticipated around the first of next year. But the doctors said they expected Mr. Quayle to resume a normal routine after that.They had planned to discharge him from the Indiana University Medical Center yesterday, but decided to hold him for another 24 hours after a test showed that the blood-thinning medication he is taking had not yet had the desired effect in guarding against further clotting.

On March 9, 2006, RUTH DETWEILER SHANER Mc GINNIS, of Chase, MD; wife of the late George F. Mc Ginnis. Born in Pottstown, PA, she was the daughter of the late Marie Detweiler and the late Elmer Detweiler. She was a graduate of Indiana University of PA, with a B.S. degree in Art Education. She was an active member of Back River United Methodist Church of Essex. She is survived by two daughters, Caren Bezanson, of Westminster, Robin Jones, of Chase and one son, Kevin Shaner, of Perry Hall and seven grandchildren.
