Immanuel

Robert E. Mason, a retired chemical engineer at Pemco Products Group, died of complications from cancer Sept. 5 at Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care in Towson. He was 78 and was a longtime resident of Northeast Baltimore. He was born in Cleveland and moved to Baltimore when he was 5. He became interested in chemistry and studied the subject at Calvert Hall College High School. He graduated in 1945. Mr. Mason enlisted in the Navy and served in Illinois and California before becoming a radio operator aboard the USS Nicholson, a destroyer.

Elizabeth Gladys Virdin, a teacher who had perfect attendance during her 39 years in the classroom, died Sunday of a heart attack at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. The Sparks resident was 100. Before her retirement in 1972, she taught home economics at Roland Park Junior High School for more than 30 years. She had earlier taught at Laurel High. Known as Bill or Billy, she was born Elizabeth Gladys Crowther on her family's Bachelor's Choice Farm in Sparks, where she lived nearly all her life.

The other Sunday, members of Baltimore's Immanuel Temple A.M.E. Church arrived for services about 9 a.m., spent the morning worshiping, singing and praising the Lord, paused for dinner, resumed worship and still didn't want to go home. They finally left about 8 p.m."It beats going to a psychiatrist," laughs their minister, Dr. Peggy Wall.Immanuel Temple has found a way to offer its members the succor they are seeking, and in return they give one of the most precious of today's commodities -- their time.

On April 23, 2008, ELNORA "Petie" of Rosedale, formerly of Govans; beloved wife of the late Joseph "Gene" Wilson; devoted companion of Harold "Whitey" Freeberger; loving mother of Ron, Cathy, Karen and Claudia. Also survived by seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and five nieces and nephews. Entombment private. A memorial service to celebrate Petie's birthday will be held in Immanuel Baptist Church on Saturday, May 17 at 11 A.M. On May 24, 2006, LEROY J. KNIGHT; beloved husband of the late Amanda Knight (nee Gillespie); loving father of Lee J. Knight and Emalee Smith; loving grandfather of four. Also survived by his brother Frank August. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, at 10 A.M. in the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Loch Raven Blvd., at Belvedere. The family will receive family and friends at 9 A.M. till 10 A.M., in the Church Sanctuary. Interment, Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens.
