Casual basketball followers in Baltimore City might not remember Daishon Knight . The 6-foot-1, 188-pound combo guard didn't play for Lake Clifton during his senior year of high school in 2010, and he never suited up for a local AAU team either. But starting this fall, hoops fans from this area will get a chance to follow Knight's progress on a bigger stage when he takes the court for Illinois State. Knight, a West Baltimore native, signed his letter of intent to play for the Redbirds last week.

Up to half of sexually active young people will get a sexually transmitted disease by the time they are 25, yet many don't seek testing because it may be difficult, costly or embarrassing. Public health officials nationally and in particularly affected cities like Baltimore, however, say they've found a method that seems to address the major hurdles — a website that supplies free in-home testing kits for three of the most commonly reported STDs. "The highest prevalence is in young adults, and we knew we had to reach these kids," said Charlotte A. Gaydos, a professor of infectious diseases at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

There can't be another team with bigger sweat rings than Illinois. Plenty of teams, such as Villanova and Kansas State, will work this week for a No. 2 seeding in the NCAA tournament. Ohio State has a chance with a big run in the Big Ten to earn a No. 1 seed. Then there is a team like Illinois, which just wants in. Actually there are few teams like Illinois. The Illini have lost five of six and coach Bruce Weber can't figure out where his team's sense of urgency went. Plenty of bracketologists think it comes down to Illinois' first-round Big Ten tournament game against Wisconsin.

TAYLORVILLE, Ill. -- Lighting up a cigarette in public has long been part of the social fabric in small towns like this one across America. A burger and a puff at Bill's Toasty. A strike and a butt at the Olde Bowl. A pizza and a smoke at the American Tap. So when the idea of a public smoking ban came before a city ordinance committee here last month, it was snuffed out by aldermen reluctant to hurt business and allow government to infringe on citizens' choice in this town of 12,000 people.

Kayani Turner admits it. The 6-foot-2 outside hitter from John Carroll loves the routine practice sessions with her Illinois volleyball teammates. "Right now, my biggest thrill here is being able to practice without injuries," said the second-year freshman who sat out last season with a strained patella tendon. "I admit how much I love practicing because I was out an entire year. Whether I get in the games or not is for sure exciting, but more rewarding is being able to practice each day."

COLLEGE PARK -- Last season, Maryland dealt Illinois its first nonconference home loss in 51 games. It's the sort of smackdown a team tends to remember. What better way to avenge such a loss than to defeat Maryland at Comcast Center, where the Terps had enjoyed nonconference success of their own - 42 wins in their past 43 games? ROCKFORD, Ill. -- With the Democratic nomination potentially riding on the outcome, Bill Clinton and Paul E. Tsongas are waging a sharply personal, and increasingly nasty, battle for votes in Tuesday's Illinois primary. For months, the Clinton campaign has been pointing toward Illinois as the decisive contest of the '92 race, the place where a big victory would make the Arkansas governor the party's presumptive nominee. And with only four days to go until the election, a big victory here appears within his reach.

Junior swingman Justin Black and senior guard Anthony Hubbard did all they could to keep visiting Morgan State in the game, but the Bears had no answer for Illinois State forward Jackie Carmichael on Sunday. Carmichael, a 6-foot-9, 240-pound senior who posted double doubles against Mississippi and Stanford in last year's NIT, produced a career-high 30 points and eight rebounds, leading the Redbirds to an 87-68 victory. After trailing by as many as 22 points early in the second half, the Bears (3-4)

When an African-American was accused of raping a white woman and another of murdering a white locomotive engineer, Springfield, Ill., exploded into a race riot on the evening of Aug. 14, 1908. The mob grew furious when they learned that the two men had been spirited away to Bloomington, Ill., by the sheriff. Sensing trouble, Gov. Charles S. Deneen sent the National Guard to the city to restore order, but the rioters were not to be stopped. After destroying a small black business district, the mob turned its fury on Badlands, a black neighborhood, where they burned some 40 homes while a crowd of 5,000 spectators looked on. An African-American barber who had tried to defend his shop was lynched.

Coppin State has closed to within single digits in the second half against two Big Ten teams this season. The result was the same against host Illinois on Sunday night, however, as it was against Purdue: a loss. The Eagles fell, 80-63, to the undefeated No. 24 Illini despite trimming a 17-point deficit to two points in the second half. Guard Tony Gallo led the Eagles with a game-high 21 points, making four of eight 3-pointers. After the Illini (10-0) took a 17-point lead, the Eagles (3-5)

CHICAGO -- With millions of Americans losing health insurance and crying for relief from soaring medical costs, Illinois is considering a bold and once-unthinkable proposal - extending medical coverage to all state residents. It's a daunting, politically divisive and potentially expensive prospect, with 1.8 million uninsured people in the state. But experts say health care reform might stand a better chance of passing in Illinois than almost anywhere in the nation. "The odds are long, but they're much better in Illinois than most other states," said Alan Weil, executive director of the National Academy for State Health Policy.

Here are highlights from Mark Turgeon's post-game analysis-interview-therapy session. Give the man credit. He says what's on his mind. If you are a Terps fan, you feel his evident pain. *Turgeon said the Terps were undone partly by shooting just 60 percent (15-25) on free throws. "It should have been a 12-point game at halftime," he said. Maryland, in fact, led by four after missing seven free throws. *He said Maryland showed in the first half that it has made strides since the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.

Gary Williams used to take the ACC/Big Ten Challenge personally, in part because of his uber-competitive nature as well as the fact that he came to Maryland from Ohio State. It showed in the way his teams played, winning nine of the 12 games in the series, including the last six. In taking over for Williams this season, coach Mark Turgeon doesn't have the same history. Neither Turgeon, whose young team faces Illinois (6-0) on Tuesday night at Comcast Center, nor his players, even knew before Monday that Maryland has never lost in five home games in the series.
