Any elementary schoolroom stocked with gummy worms, Fruit Roll-Ups and crispy rice-and-marshmallow bars is bound to be popular with pupils, and Holly Wright's third-grade classroom was no exception. "It's going to be delicious," said 8-year-old Malerie Gamblin, who spotted the goodies earlier in the day and was eager to begin her sweet craft. Malerie, like the other pupils at Ilchester Elementary School, took a break from the regular curriculum Wednesday to participate in Ilchester Inspirations, a day of crafts and activities.

Third-grade teacher Judy Maurer figured something wasn't right when a faux diamond stone on a necklace popped out as she unwrapped a gift from one of her pupils. "I said, `Oh, this is nice,'" said Maurer, recalling the memory from several holiday seasons ago. "The student said, `Oh, do you like it? I got it out of my mom's jewelry box this morning.'" Maurer called her pupil's mother, who told the teacher to keep the imitation necklace. "It does have special importance to me," said Maurer, a teacher at Ilchester Elementary School in Ellicott City.

When pupils at Ilchester Elementary hear wheels rolling down the hall, they know they'll soon be digging for treasure. The wheels are attached to the Ellicott City school's book cart, which is decorated like a large treasure chest. The treasure inside is not gold, but new books on sale for $2 each. Selling discount books directly to students is a reading motivator that is spreading through the county. Ilchester's reading specialist, Jennifer Roussillon, uses the treasure theme to add enthusiasm about buying books.
