In our previous edition of Just for Kids, we asked: If the math curse had lasted an entire year, how many minutes would that be? We received three correct responses from: Nicole Dorzweiler of Manor View Elementary, Gregory Jefferson of Furman L. Templeton Elementary and Michelle Schienle of Ilchester Elementary. The answer is 525,600 minutes. Michelle also gave us the leap year answer: 527,040.

In Baltimore CityRetirees sought to tutor, work in school librariesA new partnership is looking for retirees who can help pupils learn reading skills and who can work in the libraries at three city elementary schools.People who are at least 60 years old are being sought to share their experience with children at Abbottston, Guilford and Dallas F. Nicholas Sr. elementary schools. Participants, who will be trained, are asked to devote 15 hours a week to the school work. They will be paid $150 a month to cover out-of-pocket expenses.

When parents walked into Ilchester Elementary School's gymnasium last week, it looked like an indoor playground. The room was nearly filled with a giant obstacle course: colorful ladders and wooden ramps led to hanging bars, monkey bars and balance beams. Ilchester is one of the first schools to use new gymnastics equipment purchased by the Howard County school system in June. The equipment, called Just Add Kids, is made by the Whittle company. It will rotate among elementary schools that sign up to use it for one month.

Parents of pupils at three elementary schools in Ellicott City and Elkridge said last night that the county's Adequate Public Facilities Ordinance has not prevented school crowding and has forced the redistricting of their children. More than two dozen parents who have children in the Ilchester, Rockburn and Worthington elementary schools urged County Councilman Christopher J. Merdon to strengthen the 1992 ordinance, which bars home construction around schools that have enrollments more than 20 percent over capacity.
