On Tuesday night, professional ice hockey was back in Baltimore for the first time since 1997. However, the ice -- which is kind of a key ingredient in ice hockey -- didn't hold up well inside of a steamy 1st Mariner Arena as the Nashville Predators shut out the Washington Capitals, 2-0, in the inaugural Baltimore Hockey Classic. Outside of Baltimore, which sold out the event, the story line was the slushy ice conditions . It affected the quality of play on the ice, and after the game, several players admitted that they were worried about safety.

If you ask the girls on the Bryn Mawr hockey team, they'd tell you that playing Holton-Arms is the only game that matters. The fact that Thursday's game was for the Maryland Scholastic Hockey League title just made it mean that much more. Unfortunately for the Mawrtians (10-3), they needed a little more. Defending champion Bryn Mawr took a one-goal lead early in the third period but couldn't hold it en route to a 3-2 loss to the Panthers at the Gardens Ice House in Laurel. Blair Greenwald scored two goals — the tying goal and the game-winner — to lead Bethesda's Holton Arms (10-7)

Entering Friday's Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association championship, Rodgers had seven goals and 12 assists in 17 games, but coach Rob Merson said the senior had been somewhat unlucky. "He hit a lot of posts," Merson said. But in the most important game of the season, Rodgers put his team on his back. He had two goals and four assists in a 7-3 victory over defense-heavy St. Paul's. "He has decent skills, decent hands and is a smart hockey player," said Merson, who saw his team return to being a champion for the first time in three years.

Kevin Rodgers had two goals and four assists and sparked a pair of three-goal bursts that helped Mount St. Joseph roll to a 7-3 victory over St. Paul's in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association championship game before a packed house at the Piney Orchard Ice Arena. Mount St. Joseph (11-7-2) had won nine consecutive MIAA titles before coming up empty the past three years.

The equipment was piled high on the counter at the sporting goods store, but the bill that came with it — to Rich Berman's surprise — was even higher. He called his mother looking for some help. "Mom," Berman said, "you are not going to believe what your granddaughter wants to do now …" With a pair of skates, a stick, a helmet and pads for just about every part of the body — all used equipment, which came to $500 (father and grandmother split the tab)
