Carroll H. Hynson Sr., a prominent Anne Arundel County businessman and developer and the county's first black bail bondsman, died Sunday of pneumonia at Anne Arundel General Hospital. He was 95."He was a real distinguished gentleman who was 95 years young," said state Comptroller Louis L. Goldstein. "I've known him since 1939 when I came to Annapolis as the youngest member of the House of Delegates. He was certainly the backbone of Annapolis and I was proud to call him my friend."Mayor Alfred A. Hopkins of Annapolis praised Mr. Hynson's "ability to succeed, to overcome in a time when it was difficult being black.

Estelle Marie Hynson, a cosmetologist who appeared at breast cancer awareness rallies as she fought her disease, died Monday at her Glen Burnie home. She was 66. Mrs. Hynson, who received the diagnosis five years ago, appeared as a breast cancer survivor during Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer walks. Family members said she sported pink hair, a pink feather boa and a Panama hat trimmed in pink ribbon at last year's event in downtown Baltimore. She made the walk using a cane and later said she was proud of the busload of children, family members and friends who had accompanied her. "She wanted to fight until the end," said a son, David M. Hynson of Glen Burnie.

Charles Matthew Hynson 86, stationary engineer Charles Matthew Hynson, a retired stationary engineer, died July 7 of heart failure at his Woodlawn home. He was 86 and had lived on Ivanhoe Avenue in Govans since 1956. Before his retirement in the 1960s, he was a plant engineer at Lamm Bros., a local manufacturer. He was born in Baltimore and graduated from Frederick Douglass High School. He received a certificate in stationary engineering from the International School of Reading, Pa. During World War II, he was a member of the Army quartermaster corps and served in the Pacific.

Jerry Hynson, 61, needed something to occupy his time after he retired in 1988 as an administrator and program coordinator from the Baltimore schools.He decided to research his family's roots as a hobby.Two weeks ago, that family research earned the Winfield resident the 1999 Norris Harris Prize from the Maryland Historical Society for the best genealogical source records in Maryland."Jerry did two volumes of `The Maryland Freedom Papers' dealing with manumission records and the freedom of slaves," said Robert Bartram, reference and access services librarian at the Maryland Historical Society.

Get in line and dream.That's what lottery players did today throughout Maryland as the Lotto jackpot for Saturday's drawing climbed to about $20 million -- the highest in the game's eight-year history.Carroll Hynson, spokesman for the Maryland Lottery Agency, said queues began forming at 6 a.m. after no one won last night's $14 million Lotto prize."It's going to be a very interesting couple of days," said Hynson. "And if we don't get a winner Saturday, the jackpot for next Wednesday could go up to $25 million to $30 million."

County police arrested a Linthicum Heights man Saturday on charges of stabbing his father after an argument in their home.Herbert Maurice Hynson Jr., 28, of the 400 block of Hillview Drive was charged with first-degree assault.His father, Herbert Maurice Hynson of the same address, was in serious but stable condition at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center yesterday.Police said a man called shortly before 5 a.m. Saturday and asked for a paramedic at the Hillview Drive address.Two officers arrived and found a man on the porch who told them his father was inside bleeding badly.

Brooklyn Park soldier has won last night's $6 million Maryland Lotto drawing.Lottery spokesman Carroll H. Hynson Jr. said Sgt. Frances K. Rogers, 38, who serves with a recruitment unit at Fort Meade, purchased the winning ticket. She said she will share her winnings with a close friend, Sharon Taylor, 41, of Severn, a Desert Storm veteran now working in Rogers' unit as a civilian marketing representative.They'll collect 20 annual payments of about $290,000 each, before taxes.The winning numbers drawn last night were 10, 13, 14, 24, 26 and 27.There were 34 tickets sold matching five of the six winning numbers.
