Alex Comfort, 80, a British author who gained international fame for his best-selling "The Joy of Sex," died Sunday in Oxfordshire. The cause of death wasn't immediately available. He had suffered a series of strokes in the past nine years and was in a nursing home. "The Joy of Sex," published in 1972, sold 12 million copies worldwide and was translated into two dozen languages. Billed as the "gourmet guide to lovemaking," it contained text and illustrations. Paul Calinescu, 98, known as the father of Romanian cinema and a winner of the top prize at the prestigious Venice Film Festival, died Saturday in Bucharest.

Edward Thomas Myers, a retired senior vice president of a Baltimore printing company, died of pneumonia Jan. 8 in Costa Mesa, Calif., where he had lived for more than two years.Mr. Myers, who was 76, retired 13 years ago as senior vice president of Reese Press. Earlier, he worked for other printing companies.A native of Baltimore and a graduate of the Polytechnic Institute, he was a member of the Tuscan Lodge of the Masons, the Scottish Rite and Boumi Temple.In 1979, he moved from Baltimore to Spring Hill, Fla.He is survived by a son, Robert E. Myers of Baltimore; two daughters, Patricia Anne Sauer of Huntington Beach, Calif.
