Linebackers read a situation and react accordingly.Jomo Huggins considered his knowledge of the University of Maryland defense and jumped on the Terps' offer of a scholarship. When oral commitments start to become letters of intent next Wednesday, Maryland could sign the NCAA limit of 25 players. It already has 21 commitments, and six of the 16 high schoolers on the list, Huggins included, are linebackers who are enticed by the possibility of playing next season."I felt I had the greatest chance to play right away at Maryland," Huggins said earlier this week between classes at Holy Trinity High in Hicksville, N.Y. "That's exactly the reason I'm coming down."

Gordon Huggins first ushered in the upper deck at Memorial Stadium as a 20-year old college student. In the 39 years since, he's seen every good Orioles team and most of the bad ones. He has seen the all-time highlights - like Tippy Martinez picking off three consecutive Toronto Blue Jays in a 1983 game. He's had some unpleasant moments - like the time he saw a scorching foul ball bloody a woman's face. He has endured as countless fans, despite peering at his striped shirt, Orioles cap and orange bow tie, have asked, "Do you work here?"

Bob Pepersack, candidate for county sheriff, stood in a mental hospital cafeteria and told a group of deputies: "The laughingstock of Anne Arundel County government -- that's what you are. Every one of you."This was Pepersack's way of asking the deputy sheriffs to support him over their boss, seven-term Sheriff William R. Huggins. The deputies understood the candidate's point -- after they got one thing straight. No, I'm not criticizing you -- I'm blasting the sheriff, said Pepersack. You deputies are good men and women.

Bob Huggins has a big mouth. He admits it proudly. He speaks in absolutes. He is brash and, above all, he is always right.Just ask the city of Cincinnati.Three years ago, Huggins, a slightly manic, blow-dried, exquisitely dressed young coach from Akron, was hired to revive the University of Cincinnati's once-proud, then-humiliated basketball program. Huggins arrived on a campus that was fed up with players who had trouble with the law and academics and winning."I am," Huggins said the day he was hired, "going to take the University of Cincinnati to the Final Four.
