An elderly woman riding in the back seat of a car died Wednesday after a Howard County accident, and another elderly female passenger was badly injured, police said. Madeline Downing, 92, of Catonsville died at Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore of a medical condition brought on by the collision, according to police. Virginia Callahan, 91, also of Catonsville, was in critical condition Thursday at Shock Trauma. The accident occurred about 3 p.m. on U.S. 29 near Interstate 70. According to police, the driver of the 2005 Buick Park Avenue in which the women were passengers, Francis Xavier Callahan, 72, of Timonium, failed to stop at a red light and struck a 2006 Honda Civic as it crossed U.S. 29 to enter the ramp to westbound I-70.

A new centralized health information website intended to compare local statistics with national trends and inform users of the latest medical treatments is under preparation by a coalition of health groups led by the Horizon Foundation. The coalition working on Howard Health Counts is seeking feedback from medical professionals and agencies, but expect it to be available to the public in about two months, according to Dr. Richard Krieg, president and CEO of Horizon, the health foundation formed when Johns Hopkins Medicine took over Howard County General Hospital.

Howard County executive Ken Ulman was taken by ambulance to a Columbia hospital Thursday morning after he suffered a massive nosebleed in his office. According to a one-paragraph statement issued Thursday afternoon, Ulman "suffered a severe posterior nasal hemorrhage, resulting in a significant drop in blood pressure." Ulman was taken to Howard County General Hospital where the bleeding was brought under control, but doctors decided to keep him there for observation, said Kevin Enright, the Howard County director of the Office of Public Information.
