What kind of regular maintenance should I do to prepare my home for spring? Jim Embe, Baltimore district manager for Home Depot, suggests these spring chores for around the home. •Now is the time to put down lawn fertilizer and pre-emergent weed killer. If you want to seed your lawn, there are now products that allow you to do both. •Clean out the gutters and downspouts and make sure they haven't pulled away from the fascia during the winter. •Now is the time to power-wash the deck or the siding.

Blasted panty hose.Women try to avoid them because they bruise their feminist sensibilities or because they're just plain uncomfortable. But like single-minded salmon plowing upstream, they always seem to return to the stores in search of the suffocating cover-ups.Some come back to panty hose after a summer hiatus. For others, a special occasion looms and they can't resist the compulsion to struggle into Evan-Picone's Sheerest Sheers or Hanes' Silk Reflections. So they set out to understand one of the garments most shrouded in mystery and confusion.

Until you have tangled with the garden hose, the outdoor puttering-around season has not started. Once the hose has been hooked up, other affiliated, warm-weather activities -- car washing, sprinkler tending and backyard snoozing -- can begin.Last weekend, I wrestled with the household hose and thereby )) opened the backyard watering season.Someone else had already pulled the hose out of its basement hibernation spot, and had hooked the hose up to the outside faucet, or sillcock. It was a hurried hook-up job. Water was FTC trickling from the faucet down the hose, which lay on the ground in a great Gordian knot.

The Baltimore fire lieutenant who died Sunday night after an apparent heart attack had carried a hose into a burning West Baltimore building alone because of the ordered reduction in the size of Fire Department crews, fire officials said yesterday. However, it is not yet known if the exertion of carrying the 75-foot-long polyester hose, weighing about 45 pounds, up the stairs to the second floor of a building in the 800 block of West Lombard Street contributed to the heart attack, the officials said.

For the holidays I splurged on one of the new fitted sheath dresses in a pretty and fashionable shade of blue. But unfortunately, in my excitement at finding a perfect color and fit, I ignored my fat legs. They really are a problem.I've tried the dress with sheer black hose and black shoes, but it just looks old-fashioned and wrong. Have you any suggestions? The fashionable look in hosiery for fall is the nude leg. So I suggest you go that way.First find a pair of hose that matches your skin tone.

Editor: Oct. 16, 2 a.m., the Susquehanna Hose Company responded to a fire call at my residence on Red Head Way in Havre de Grace. The volunteer firefighters went above and beyond their call of duty. They mitigated further water sprinkler damage by use of tarps and moving furniture. They carefully and methodically searched all possible causes of heat. The volunteer firefighters were patient, polite, efficient and extremely professional. I would like to personally thank the 13 Susquehanna Hose Company volunteer firefighters who arose from their beds and responded: Assistant Fire Chiefs Steve Allers and Wayne Carroll; Fire Lieutenants Billy Lamana and Scott Pentz; Firefighters Ray Burroughs, Cameron Carter, Jami Gomez, Andy Lempka, Charles Maddox, Chad Myers, Ken Perry Jr. and Drivers Jim Hawkins and Mike Shenk.

Our Maryland state government subsidizes buyers of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles $360 each, on top of the federal subsidy of about $6,000. The customers for this product are mainly the well-to-do. The alleged purpose of this redistribution of wealth is to conserve fuel and reduce harmful emissions. To provide a comparable benefit, at far less expense, to working and middle class Marylanders who cannot, even with subsidies, justify the expense of the exotic vehicles for which the state is investing money developing plug-in power stations at various locations, why not look into free compressed air for all those under-inflated tires?

Here's a glimpse inside $50 million (estimated revenue) industrial hose-maker Titeflex, circa 1988: A new order would be entered into the MRP (Materials Requirements Planning) computer system. It (MRP) would create paperwork for purchasing, production schedulers, the storeroom and quality assurance. Engineering and cost reviews -- more paper jumbles -- would also be initiated.According to Jon Simpson, president of the Springfield, Mass., firm, all this generated umpteen meetings -- "morning meetings," "afternoon meetings" and "engineering review meetings."

LAST WEEK, I came home with a pair of pantyhose given to me by another woman, and my wife didn't hit me with a frying pan. It happened the day the Vidalia Onion Lady came to town. Mary Louise Lever is that lady. A resident of Rome, Ga., she travels to various cities passing out pantyhose, recipes and wisdom about Vidalia onions. Vidalia onions are like Southern belles -- they are exceptionally sweet but bruise easily. The crop, which by law can be labeled Vidalia only if it was grown in one of 20 southeast Georgia counties, should begin arriving in Baltimore-area markets by next week, Lever said.

In rural hamlets, the volunteer fire station often doubles as the town square, community center and bingo parlor, where pancake breakfasts and spaghetti dinners bring everyone together at the same folding tables. That used to happen here, in this tiny unincorporated community in Western Maryland, where the closest town with a paid police force is across the north branch of the Potomac River and railroad tracks in West Virginia. But the thrice-weekly games of bingo are down to just Sundays, with only a handful of diehards and old-timers attending.

Treating twisted, bulging varicose veins used to require painful invasive surgery. Today, a booming industry beckons patients with free screenings and deals on "lunch break" treatments promising faster, more effective and painless procedures. But how do you know which treatment to choose - or if you need to be treated at all? Are varicose veins a legitimate medical problem, or purely cosmetic? For many of the estimated 20 million Americans with the condition, varicose veins are ugly and bothersome, not an indication of a medical problem.
