Verna Horsey blew up a green balloon and helped Alex Sandmeier attach it to a tube on a toy race car. The 5-year-old put the car on the floor, hoping it would zip away in a flash. But the car lurched about two feet and sputtered to a stop. "Oh no," groaned Horsey, a fourth-grade teacher at Hickory Elementary School. "That one was a dud." The Bel Air kindergartner giggled while Horsey blew up another balloon. This time he let go of the car and it sped across the floor. "Wow! 110 inches!

The kind of fire the Rev. Willie Ray says he wants to set in Baltimore churches is one that will make congregants come out and join hands against the killing.Yesterday, the hundreds who did come out for the eighth annual Love Hands Across Baltimore Crusade were not enough to make an unbroken link from Hilton Street on the west side to Milton Avenue on the east side. The event was sponsored by more than three dozen community, governmental and business groups. Some day, Ray said, enough people will join hands to form a chain "from Hilton to Milton."

A Delaware company wants to mine sand and gravel on a parcel of farmland and forest along Marshyhope Creek on Maryland's Eastern Shore - a proposal that is raising alarm among conservationists who fear the operation will destroy rare wetlands, harm endangered species and ruin bird habitat. The Horsey Family LLC is asking Dorchester County this week for a zoning exception so it can excavate soil, sand and gravel from the property and create an "open-water lake." Workers would then float a hydraulic dredge into the lake and extract the remaining mineral resources, according to an application filed with the county last month.

Annapolis is a lovely city at any time of year, but it is never more beautiful than at Christmas. Gov. William Donald Schaefer and Hilda Mae Snoops very nicely included me in one of their holiday parties held at the governor's mansion this past week.Youngsters sang carols as guests arrived, and few guests went inside until they had admired a marvelous wooden train that adorns the lawn. CXS, B&O and Conrail are among the decals on the different cars and I am told that an Amish man from the Dutch Market on the Eastern Shore made the train.
