High school essays certainly have changed since Mr. Flip was writing them. Whatever happened to "What I did on my summer vacation"? One of the nation's top college football prospects, Jamarkus McFarland, wrote about his recruitment for a class at his Texas high school. In his essay, McFarland described a party he attended while being wooed by Texas: "I will never forget the excitement amongst all participants," McFarland wrote, according to a New York Times story. "Alcohol was all you can drink, money was not an option.

Joseph Turner's 17-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter gave No. 11 Texas Christian its first lead of the night, which the Horned Frogs preserved for a 17-16 victory over No. 9 and previously undefeated Boise State in the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego. Boise State (12-1) was trying to finish 13-0 for the second time in three seasons. The Broncos took a 10-0 lead on Ian Johnson's 20-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter, but their high-scoring offense bogged down against TCU's fast, aggressive defense.

If you want to know how to develop great style without blowing your budget or your belief system, look no further than Jen Horning. The 34-year-old Frederick resident is a secretary at the U.S. Department of Commerce. As a single mom who's also been a vegetarian since she was a child, Horning has honed a style based on price and principles. On the job, she favors a slightly sexy professional look with lots of pencil skirts, jackets and blouses. On her off time, she favors a more "playful" look, like the outfit she was wearing to see Brazilian Girls perform at Sonar.

Bad enough that Philly has been trying to claim Edgar Allan Poe. Now The City of Brotherly Love seems to be making a play for The Wire. David Simon, producer of the celebrated HBO series, appears at Princeton University Thursday to discuss "Policy and Politics in America's Urban Crisis." At his side will be Mayor Michael Nutter of Philadelphia. Hmmph! Why not Sheila Dixon? She knows policy, politics, urban crises. And she happens to be mayor of the city where the series was actually set. How come Dixon won't be there?

In about four weeks, we'll be drafting. So it's time to jump into the nitty-gritty of analyzing the talent at each position. I don't have space to do top 10 or 20 rankings for each, so during the next few weeks, I'll list guys I particularly like and don't like at each spot. Let's hit it. Catchers The pool of hitting talent will never be deep at this most demanding of positions, but it's not at an ebb either. Russell Martin is a rare five-category talent, and fellow twenty-somethings Joe Mauer, Brian McCann and Victor Martinez are all good enough hitters to help at any spot.

Can you suggest the best time to take a South American cruise around Cape Horn, including the smoothest month for sailing? The best times to travel are December, January and February, when you'll likely encounter average daytime highs in the 80s in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Santiago, Chile, and lows in the 50s and 60s. But it's only temporary. As your ship makes it way toward the southern tip of South America, be prepared to bundle up. In Ushuaia, the capital of Tierra del Fuego province in Argentina, the daytime temperature ranges from 42 to 57 degrees.

Paul Tudor Jones II leans back in his chair and grins. The stock market is going to crash, and he knows it. "There will be some type of a decline, without a question, in the next 10, 20 months," he says in his rich Memphis drawl. "And it will be earth-shaking; it will be saber-rattling." Coming from a financial speculator as prominent as Jones, a man with about $19 billion of short-term trading capital at his disposal, the words might be enough to send ripples through a stock market that, apparently defying logic, has been hitting new highs each day. Except that the crash to which Jones refers occurred Oct. 19, 1987.

At first blush, it's a bit hard to believe William Rhodes' art studio on St. Paul Street doubles as his home. Almost everything in the building is his creation. The three-story house in lower Charles Village breathes whimsy and oozes artsy textures even as you step through the front door of St. Paul Art and Design Studio. Just inside the house, the shine of the hardwood floor catches you off guard. Is it wet? The beams are the color of Sunday-morning sweet-maple syrup, and stretch from the large living room to a slightly smaller dining room.
