Baltimore has surpassed its 2008 homicide total with days to go in 2009. On the heels of three fatal shootings Saturday night, police reported two additional killings Monday: An East Baltimore man shot in his home Tuesday died over the weekend at an area hospital, and police said the remains found in an East Baltimore rowhouse in October 2008 are those of a woman who was strangled. The killings bring the city total to 235, one more than the number recorded in 2008. Last year's figure represented a 20-year low. Though killings are up, police statistics show total shootings are down more than 20 percent, as nonfatal shootings have dropped by more than 125. Harrison Butler, 44, of the 700 block of N. Linwood Ave. was shot in the head about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday by an unknown assailant and was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he was placed on life support, said homicide detective Roscoe Lewis.
