WASHINGTON - Invoking the wisdom of the walrus in Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass, a federal judge said yesterday that the "time has come" to decide the fate of two reporters whom he found in contempt last fall for declining to reveal the name of a Bush administration source. The leak is believed to have blown the cover of a CIA agent. For a moment during the hearing in U.S. District Court, Judge Thomas F. Hogan sounded as though he was about to send the two reporters, Matthew Cooper of Time magazine and Judith Miller of The New York Times, to jail right away.

Long before television, video games, Jell-O wrestling, speed dating, the Internet, paintball and the vile scourge of karaoke, there existed a form of entertainment so pure, simple and selfless that - like most pure, simple and selfless things - it didn't last long. People from different walks of life would gather at a common meeting place, break out their instruments and make music together - maybe not always beautiful music, but that wasn't the point. This pastime went by various names - jam, sing-along, hoedown, group sing - but none more silly than the one used by those who gathered, once upon a time, to play folk music: "Hootenanny," they called it. And, some still do. In the back room at Hogan's Alley - a South Baltimore tavern formerly called Cox's - they meet every other Sunday: Dave brings his mandolin, Chris his guitar.

Hulk Hogan wants to toss animal cruelty out of the ring. The pro wrestling legend, who has a pet rooster named Lily, has joined with the Humane Society of the United States in an effort to persuade boxer Roy Jones, who recently bought a cockfighting arena in Louisiana, to get out of that business. Hogan's argument? Cockfighting, he said, is "not a real sport." The road to the major leagues can be paved with ... lousy motels. Listen to Gabe Ribas of Brunswick, Maine, describe the worst place he has stayed during his four years in the minors.

EMMITSBURG -- As she knelt on the cold concrete of the outdoor sanctuary, Donna Hogan gazed at the statue of the Virgin Mary. The swoosh of the grotto's stream, said to run deep with healing waters, was the only sound as she bowed her head in prayer and quiet contemplation. With a flawless blue sky overhead and a crisp spring breeze at her back, Hogan, 67, of Fairfield, seemed to melt into the tranquillity emanating from the grotto, a cave-like structure the size of a walk-in closet, made of stone more than 200 years ago on the side of a mountain.

A venerable State House tradition was marred yesterday when a half-dozen legislators marched out of the Senate chambers to protest what they called an overtly political speech from Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.'s chief of patronage. Appointments Secretary Lawrence J. Hogan Jr. delivered the remarks while handing the Senate a package of nominees for dozens of state boards and commissions, the "green bag" appointments named after the color of the satchel in which they have been brought down from the governor's office for decades.
