THE EXECUTIVE from the Ben Hogan golf club company was indignant. And maybe he had reason to be.He had just read a column about the "Buy American" crusade in which I said it was difficult to know which products are really American.I had given a number of examples, including these two paragraphs:"Maybe you are a golfer planning on buying a new set of clubs this spring. But only a couple of American-owned companies remain. 'Ben Hogan' might be stamped on it, but the company is owned by some sushi-eater."

Several weeks into the new school year, the Baltimore City School system informed Jeffrey Hogan that his services as a Govans Elementary schoolteacher were no longer required. Hogan disagreed. Despite his dismissal during a certification sweep, the following Monday found Hogan back at his familiar spot at the chalkboard in Room 105B, cheerily leading his wriggling class of first graders through another day's adventure in reading and arithmetic. It is here, at Govans, where Hogan has worked magic for going on five years.

It was one promise he knew he could keep. Patrick N. Hogan offered it only sparingly on the campaign trail last summer, when he went door to door in Frederick asking for votes, and people looked at him in shock. Wasn't he a bit young to represent them in Annapolis? they asked him. Well, yes, he answered, but he had experience as an intern in the State House, a degree in politics and a lifelong passion, coming as he did from a family of public servants. Plus, he assured them, he would grow older.
