The torrid summer run by the Maryland Bays through the American Professional Soccer League has turned cool with the weather.Former Baltimore Blast goalkeeper Scoop Stanisic and his Albany Capitals teammates sent shivers through the Bays by winning Game 1 of a best-of-two semifinal series, 2-1, in overtime Sept. 6 in Albany, N.Y.That victory by Albany, in which Stanisic made nine saves, has backed the defending APSL champion Bays into the position of having to beat the Capitals twice tonight at Cedar Lane Park (7:05 p.m.)

Gary Hindley, the coach of the Maryland Bays, is keeping an eye on some delicate chemistry experiments this week.National team players Jeff Agoos, Desmond Armstrong and Bruce Murray practiced with the Bays for the first time this week, vTC and Hindley is most interested to see how they mix in with the defending American Professional Soccer League champions.One ingredient has already been successfully added. George Gelnovatch was signed to a Bays contract in mid-April, and he's performed ably at stopper in a 2-0 exhibition win over the Blast and last week's season-opening 2-1 road victory against the Penn-Jersey Spirit.

The Maryland Bays posted the best record in the American Professional Soccer League this season, and now they have swept the Coach of the Year and Most Valuable Player awards.Gary Hindley was named the Coach of the Year after guiding the Bays to a 19-2 regular-season record and into the postseason against the Albany Capitals beginning Friday.Forward Jean Harbor, who topped the APSL in goals (17), assists (11) and total points (45) was chosen MVP, leading a contingent of six Bays named to the all-star team.

Peter Vermes, the U.S. National team captain, is in Columbia this weekend and so are approximately 4,000 youngsters who will compete in the 200-team Columbia Invitational Soccer tournament.Between the inevitable autograph sessions, Vermes will be host to the Chiquita Soccer Challenge today at Centennial High School from noon to 3 p.m., and he'll play for the Tampa Bay Rowdies (1-2) against the Maryland Bays (3-0) tonight in an American Professional Soccer League game at Cedar Lane Park.The Chiquita Challenge is for youngsters 6 to 14 and is a comprehensive test of soccer skills, combining ball control, dribbling, passing and shooting into one course.

Along with breaking a record, the Maryland Bays broke th Penn-Jersey Spirit, 5-0, last night at Cedar Lane Park.Midfielder Bruce Murray's second-half goal at 46 minutes, 45 seconds, gave Maryland a 5-0 lead and set a Bays record for most goals scored in a game.The win was the Bays' fourth shutout of the season."The biggest thing was trying to get the shutout," Bays coach Gary Hindley said. "We've given up 10 goals in the last four games."L Forward Brian Haynes led the Bays in scoring with two goals.

The Maryland Bays (9-0), who are looking for their 10th straight win and 18th consecutive American Professional Soccer League victory, are westward bound today and tomorrow on what might be the most difficult road trip of the season.The Bays, leading the Western Division, will take on the Colorado Foxes tonight, then travel to San Francisco to take on the second-place San Francisco Bay Blackhawks tomorrow.With road games on consecutive days, Bays coach Gary Hindley said there isn't a lot of time to worry about much else.
