Maybe it was the sight of an opponent from his home state of Pennsylvania. Or perhaps it was the miserable, rainy conditions that allowed him to thrive. Or maybe the stars were simply aligned. Whatever the reason, Towson's Steve Hessler stepped out of the shadows and into the spotlight last Saturday against Lafayette. On a team on which his running mate at inside linebacker, Neal Regan, led the team in tackles last season and P.D. Moore, the strong-side linebacker, made the All-Patriot League team as a sophomore, Hessler is easy to overlook.

Towson's farewell tour of the Patriot League opened successfully at Minnegan Field at Towson Stadium yesterday as the Tigers outlasted Lafayette, 19-13, before 1,600 waterlogged fans. The Tigers, bound for the Atlantic 10 next season, used a solid defensive effort and some help from Mother Nature to derail a Lafayette offense led by one of the school's best-ever quarterbacks. Tailbacks Mikal Lundy and Matt Romeo each scored touchdowns for the Tigers (2-1, 1-0 Patriot League), who never trailed after building an early, 9-0 lead.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. -Before Sherm Wood sat down for his postgame session with reporters in a Betzler Field locker room, Salisbury's football coach muttered a few words he might want to hang on to. "Boy, those [King's College] kids played hard," said Wood, the Sea Gulls' fourth-year coach. "If anything, we learned a whole lot from this." Two things come to mind: be sure to cash in when scoring opportunities materialize, and make certain the special teams remain error-free. Salisbury (9-2)
