The family will receive friends on Thursday at the Sharon Seventh Day Adventist Church, 5814 Harford Road at 11:30am followed by funeral service at 12 noon.

Ralph H. Hemphill Jr., a former Crown Central Petroleum Corp. executive who later worked for the state Department of Agriculture, died Oct. 7 of complications from Alzheimer's disease at a San Diego assisted-living facility. The longtime Towson resident was 89. The son of a contractor and a homemaker, Ralph Hayes Hemphill Jr. was born in Philadelphia and raised in Upper Darby, Pa. After graduating from Upper Darby High School, Mr. Hemphill worked before World War II at the old Baldwin Locomotive Works in Eddystone, Pa., and the Sun Shipbuilding & Drydock Co. in Chester, Pa. With the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the Navy, where he was trained as a carrier pilot and flew Douglas Dauntless dive bombers and F4U Corsair fighter planes.

A man who has been waiting more than two years for trial was convicted yesterday on charges he shot an 18-year-old Northeast Baltimore man after gambling with him.Yesterday's conviction of Mark Anthony Hemphill, 20, was the first of four murder cases against him.Hemphill, of the 5100 block of Ivanhoe Ave., will be sentenced May 26. Baltimore prosecutors have asked Circuit Judge John C. Themelis for a sentence of life without parole.Hemphill was convicted of killing Christopher Claude Bailey in October 1996.

Vera Case, 31, worked at animal hospitalServices for Vera Case, a Mount Airy resident, will be held at 3 p.m. tomorrow at Witzke Funeral Homes Inc., 5555 Twin Knolls Road, Columbia.Ms. Case, 31, was shot to death at her home Saturday. Police say her husband shot her and killed himself.Ms. Case married an Army sergeant serving in her native Germany about nine years ago and moved to the United States. About eight years ago, she began working at Columbia Animal Hospital and was known as a caring worker.

PHOENIX -- A woman dangled about 20 feet off the ground for about an hour when her hair became entangled in her rock climbing equipment."I was hanging in the air by my hair and my harness," Tracie Hemphill, 19, said yesterday. "I was screaming, yelling and crying. It hurt."Ms. Hemphill, who said she had gone rock climbing only once before, was rappelling down a rock face on Camelback Mountain when her hair got caught yesterday morning.To make matters worse, she said, well-meaning hikers heard her screaming and yelling and tried to help by tugging at her rope, hoping to free her."

Police chase teenager who fled from Hickey State and city police were chasing a Jeep early this morning through parts of northern and northeastern Baltimore in pursuit of 16-year-old Davon Julius, who escaped nearly a month ago from the Charles H. Hickey Jr. School in Cub Hill, in Baltimore County. State troopers assigned to the fugitive apprehension squad in Columbia spotted the Jeep with its rear window shattered near The Alameda about 11 p.m. and gave chase. City police joined the pursuit.

Kathryn Marie Hemphill, 84, a top golfer in the 1930s and 1940s, died Wednesday in Columbia, S.C. Ms. Hemphill was the top amateur women's golfer in the United States in 1937. She reached the semifinals of the national amateur championship in bTC 1936 and 1937, and helped the U.S. Curtis Cup team defeat Great Britain in 1938.Bruno F. Straub, 82, a scientist who was president of Communist Hungary in its waning days, died yesterday in Budapest. Mr. Straub led Hungary's presidential council in 1988-1989 as the country moved away from decades of Communist rule.
