Helena E. Sawyer Roberts Wright, a retired city elementary school teacher and principal who was an active member of Heritage United Church of Christ, died Aug. 18 at her Lochearn home of complications from heart disease. She was 93. "She was a pillar of Baltimore education and society," said Latrell A. Clark, an educator who had attended Hilton Elementary School from 1977 to 1983 when Mrs. Wright was its principal. "She made learning fun and made you want to come to school. " The daughter of John Sawyer and Clara Doyle Sawyer, who owned and operated a boarding house, the former Helena Elizabeth Sawyer was born in Norfolk, Va., and moved in 1929 to Lexington Street in West Baltimore.

Dear grandmother of Evan Stewart John and loving sister of Lucille Stone of Bowie, MD. Mrs. John was an accomplished musician, receiving her masters degree from The Peabody Conservatory of Music. She taught for over 30 years in Baltimore County and City schools, public and private. On August 15, 2007, DOUGLAS J. GALLOW of Dataw Island, SC. Born July 18, 1925 on Long Island, NY. He served in the 104th Timberwolf Infantry Division in the European Theater in WWII. He retired as Director of Market Research from the Noxell Corporation, Baltimore, MD. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Harriet, his daughter Ellen of Decatur, GA, son Doug, Jr., of Lebanon, OH and daughter Connie of Bel Air, MD. Doug is also survived by a daughter-in-law, two sons-in-law and ten grandchildren.

The owners of Smedly's, a stylish new cafe in Fells Point, have all the energy and idealism of the very young. They make the soups, muffins and other food from scratch, man the counter themselves, serve really good coffee and support local artists. And yet, they are not twentysomethings. They are mature adults who bring a welcome measure of sophistication to the venture. Owners Helena and Bob Williams, who live in an apartment upstairs, are empty-nesters who moved to Baltimore after their youngest child left for college.
